You did not say if you have a very old computer being that you are running Windows 98. If that is the case it would be in your very best interest to shop around for a new computer.

I don't know what country you reside in but you can find an new computer for a minimum of $400 and up. The drivers and hardware will all be current to support the latest Microsoft Platforms.

You have to go out and purchase Windows XP Home or Windows XP Prof. (Microsoft does not update any platform for free. All must be purchase).

I don't go what country that you reside in, but you can call via telephone around and your best deals is to get an OEM as you make a small few dollar purchase and you can get the Windows XP Prof., for $100.00 or less.

Very important that you make sure the box has not been open and the bar code and registration key is on the side of the box.

There are some criminal dealers who open the box and install the program into other pc and re-package the box so that a new person making a purchase will not know.

In cases like this you will have wasted your money, because Microsoft, "WGA", (Windows Genuine Advantage) tool vill not validate your platform. An if that happens you will have to purchase a new platform.

My suggestion is that when you purchase the new platform stay there with the tech., that installs the platform for you and and have him also install SP2 and other critical updates, as Microsoft will verify atleast X 2 or time X3 that your platform is genuine.

This way you will know before you leave the place you made the purchase.

I am sure that you know that Microsoft does not support Windows 98 any an all versions, plus Windows 2000 versions any longer.

Buy a newer version of windows.
Put in cd while in window.
Choose Upgared.

But, if you are running 98 on your current computer it is likely that all you will be able to run is windows 2000 and that might not run too well. It is probably in your best interest to just upgrade your entire computer.

Go out and buy the upgrade disk and install it.

Be very careful. You have a very old computer there and if you put modern software like Windows XP on it, most likely you will be posting here asking us why it is so slow. It is slow because it isn't made to run the new software.

If I were you I would save up and get a new computer. You will spend about $100 on the upgrade, not be happy with it, and still have an old system. You can get a new system for about $400 and be very pleased.

All you have to do is purchase the new Operating System you want (Windows XP, Windows 2000, etc.), then put the CD into your computer.

The installation program will walk you through the upgrade step by step; just follow the on-screen instructions.

It is important to note that your computer itself must have the necessary hardware to support the new operating system. The package for the new operating system will list the "System Requirements"; take the manual that came with your PC to the store with you, as all of the info about your computer's hardware is listed in the "specifications" section.

Hop this helps!

You can just put in a WinXP CD and start the upgrade process... easy as pie... I assuming your hardware will support WinXP.
