Briefly. There is an element-Carbon 14- that is contained in all organic material and it decays at a known rate therefore the amount of carbon 14 contained within any given fossil gives a reasonable estimate of when the organism died, although it's accuracy decreases with dates in excess of 15 000 years give or take.
