I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback x He is very clean and honestly doesn't smell like a dog at all unless he gets dirty ears...So I clean his ears but other than that he's never had a bath...He's 3...I've said this to a few people and gotten very surprised reactions...Does anyone else have a dog that takes such meticulous care of themselves??

Short haired Sighthounds are usually very clean. My Whippets only get a bath when they are going to a show. They clean themselves (and each other) and when they get muddy the dirt just brushes of when it dries. Some hardly ever get baths, they just don't need them, and they don't smell whatsoever.

I, too, have a RR. He gets a bath about every six months. He often has had skin problems so I use an oatmeal shampoo with flea control. If your dog is 3 and has never had one, it will not be a fun experience. A pigs ear may help after though. My RR knows it is the ONLY time he ever gets a pigs ear so he climbs into the tub with only a little fight. :)

I've seen clean dogs but personally never heard of a dog going without a bath by the time he's 3. Why not just give him a bath? It's not like dogs dislike water like cats so it couldn't hurt and I'm sure he won't mind.

Some dogs have a smell, others don't. A smelly dog will still smell, soon after it's bath.

The only reason to bathe dog is if he really rolls around in dirt or mud, or something stinky. You CAN'T wash the "dog" off the dog....at least not for very long.

Now....if someone wants to wash behind my ears and my.....uh, you know.....well, that would be very nice!! :)

Maybe you are just used to the smell. I have not met a dog yet that doesn't smell at some time or another. I work at an animal clinic.

He might want a bath! Did he tell you he did not? Heh heh. He is awfully big, so I'll bet it would be a big job, but just give him one for good measure and see if he likes it. I had a big doberman and just got in the shower with him because it was too hard to hang over the bathtub and bathe him.

Yes it is. I have two large dogs, a four year old and a two year old. Never had a bath, no smell, good diet that includes meat, fish, poultry and veggies. They do get treats, my wife spoils them and they are not over weight.

My dog never smells like a dog either but dirt doesn't always stink you should bathe your pooch at least every other month.
