Knowledge can be transferred in a number of ways. Science is often considered to be a resource for all for the benefit of mankind and academic researchers' reputations are built on publications. Applied science is more problematic. Companies may wish to enhance their reputation for being open about their business by publishing some details on the science and technology of what they do. However technology secrets tend to leak or simply be deduced from available evidence and to stay ahead of the game a company has to pursue advances in technology all the time.
