swimming is a great cardiovascular excercise to help you lose weight but will not make you as lean as running. Here is why: Generally runners look leaner and more defined than swimmers, ever wonder why?
If you train your body in "water cardio" then your body will naturally preserve a bit more fat to help more regulate your body heat in the water. That doesn't mean swimming is not a great excercise and won't get you "cut and lean" but if you are looking to lower your bf% to an abnormally low level then the lean look of a runner is what will carry you the extra mile not the lean swimmer look.
Now apply that to the whales. As creatures that spend thier entire life in the sea, and also in a lot of cold areas of the ocean wouldn't you expect them to have lots of body fat? (aside from the fact they are a different species and what is fat for a human is not necessarily what is fat for a whale).

Whales have to keep a large intake of blubber because they have spells where they don't eat and when this happens they use the fat or blubber as food. Pretty much what would happen to your body if you didn't eat, Your body would kick into life saving mode and burn up your fat reserves. It is also excellent insulation again deep sea diving for squid etc. Other whales just eat plankton and move to the poles which is another feeding ground for IE the blue whale.

There's a deal on at the moment in McDonalds for a whaley whaley supersize meal. Whales just can't resist. Plus, theres no gyms underwater and they get turned away from local leisure centres. So harsh.

size isn't really that important in the sea... remember , they aren't on land..they don't have to carry their weight, the water does that for them... but size is important for defense... if you're big, you don't usually get picked on... lastly, if you had to survive in the temperatures they have to, you'd appreciate a pretty substantive layer of blubber to insulate you.

well they have a low metabolic rate and they actually don't move that much under water every move is made to conserve energy.
