Wow, some of you are way off on your answers. The Atkins diet is NOT a 0 carb diet. It's not all about high fat, either. Yes, the first two week induction period is a bit restrictive, but it's still not 0 carbs.

OP, I suggest getting the 1992 edition of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, and read it. Twice. It explains everything you need to know. For the first two weeks, you should limit your carb intake to 20 grams. Those 20 grams should come from vegetables, mainly green ones. You can eat meat - preferably lean. Eat until you are satisfied, but not full. Drink your water. Exercise. THAT is what Atkins is about. The first few days are rough, as your body adjusts, but most low carbers experience increased energy after that. And most low carbers also LOWER their cholesterol and triglycerides over time.

And of course, if you go off the plan, you'll probably gain the weight back. That is true of ANY way of eating. On Atkins, I eat more "natural" foods than I ever did. The Atkins plan does provide a "ladder" of phases that allows you to introduce more carbohydrates as you lose weight.

Get the book and read it. And visit the boards at http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/index.php and read about their experiences.

*****To address your addition*****
If you're only going to "diet" for two weeks, you shouldn't bother at all. Once you go back to eating the way you do now, you will most likely gain back what you've lost. This is true of anyone trying for a quick fix, no matter what diet they use.

Good luck to you!

0 carbohydrates
As many calories as you like [more the better because this is the only form of energy that is actually keeping you going]

Personally I would advise you simply monitor the amount you eat and quit the Atkins; yes it may make you thinner but it doesn't make you healthy.

I lost 2 stone 13 pounds on the Atkins and now am finding it very hard to gain weight [I am 18 y/o and 10 st that's not good]

Get off the FAtkins diet right now and eat healthy.

Atkins is a diet that deprives you of proper carbs and encourages you to take in a larger than normal amount of saturated fat. You should read about proper nutrition and learn. Any alleged gains on tha atkins diet will be temporary, as it is an unhealthy and unnatural diet you will not be able to remain on it for long and you will gain back in spades what you have lost AND could possibly caused long term damage to your health.

My suggestion (and probably the suggestion of your physician and any nutritionist) would be to toss aside that dangerous diet and learn about real nutrition.

People only go on the atkins diet because it gives them a "quick fix" and provides large gains in the short term on the scale (as will any new diet as it initially restricts the foods you eat). "Low carb" only works because it forces you to toss aside bad carbs like pastries and white bread that are easily accessible while on the go.

If you want to learn about real nutrition, there are tons of books out there but a good place to start is Eat, Drink and be Healthy, The Harvard Medical School Diet to Healthy Eating. Dr. Willett.
There are tons of other good nutrition books, but I prefer to cite this one to people because it talks primarily from a sensible healthy eating approach and gives lots of information. The endorsement by Harvard Medical School doesn't hurt either. It is a good base to measure other nutrition books by.

i pity you, soon you'll be exhausted, starving big time and your cholesterol, triglycerides will be high and you'll put on weight because you can't take the starvation any more and will give into your hunger pangs.

once you're done with this foolishness??? try a better diet.. like a well balanced one.. here's a reference you can use it's so freaking easy. www.mypyramid.gov and then you'll feel better, lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, feel more active and not starve yourself to death.

atkins will fail you shortly. most times one will only lose 30lbs at the most and then your blood pressure will be high, muscle tone will be lost and bone density will deteriorate.

atkins is a bad diet and don't do it for the rest of your life (oh i'm not worried about that you won't this diet has a high failure rate) then get on a reasonable plan as mentioned above.

Don't do it everyone I know has lost weight great but always ends up at least half stone heavier than start weight, there's other ways. But if ur insistent I don't think the calorie count matters, just stick to the protein and don't use low fat dressings/spreads as packed with carbs. Clean ur teeth regular as your breath stinks of dog food!!!

All fad diets are good until you start eating normally. Best course of action is to just eat properly, and excersie - you will be surprised - the exercise is the best get plenty and you won't have to diet.
