A virus can last as long as it takes your body to fight it off. Viruses unlike bacteria do not have medicine to kill them. Not to get too technical, but viruses do not have the same cell casing protection that bacteria do. Their defenses are much higher and therefore are harder to kill. Once you penetrate the cell membrane of a bacteria and get inside, you can kill it. That's why they tell you to feed a cold (cold are viruses) because you are building up your own body's defenses (immune system) against it.

Many viruses can last for months, like mononucleosis. While some can last for years and eventually create problems for the body resulting in death, such as HIV. Cold and flu viruses usually only last a couple of weeks. However, if you have a poor immune system all viruses and bacterial infections may last much longer for you than for a person of average immune system health.

once you have a virus you have it for the rest of your life. It just takes different things to activate it again and again. so once you have a cold you have it forever same goes for chicken pox, herpes and cold sores they are all the same just different kinds of the same viral in infection but u can't kill a virus it just mutates into different forms
