You need to call your vet and get him on frontline asap. That is the only true way to get rid of t hem to be honest. It might be a little pricey but it sure will save you money in the long run and your pet from being miserable. Mine cost about 40 bucks for a three month supply,
Do not do the cheapie things at Walmart been there done that and its a waste of money they do not work at all !!! And flea collars are a total waste of money to they dont work
Before you put the fontline on him , give him a good bath with some flea soap. I think mine is Hartz with flea killer and a conditioner all at once and it smells pretty good. Once you give him a bath you will knock alot of the fleas off and then give your dog the frontline. The frontline is water proof because it soaks down into their skin.
If you dont get it done soon your dog will get infected with tapeworms and then you will have another mess on your hands with that . If it was me I would watch his stool for awhile and see if you see white worms in the stool. If you do take a sample to your vet and they can get him on some tapeworm medicine which will only take a day or so clear up .
Good Luck I just went through all this with one of my dogs

Fleas are such a problem and a hard one to get rid of. First you need to be applying a product to keep this from happening. Some of the heartworm preventions include this but if your using a heartworm prevention that does not you can use a product called frontline or advantage. Do not use hartz spot on. You need to fog your house as well and treat the outdoors. There are many products to treat all three at www.valleyvet.com Your vet will have these too. The initial treatment should be a bath w/a good flea and tick shampoo but you'll have to wait a few before applying the frontline or advantage. I hope this dog is on a heartworm prevention to take care of hook and roundworms. Fleas cause all kinds of problems,, worms, skin, anxiety. You may have to treat your dog for worms as well. I would need to know more history on what this dog is on so I suggest think about what I said and if confussed ask a vet. Good luck. Next yr be one step ahead of the flea..YUCK

There is a pill you can get from the vet called Capstar. It kills all fleas currently on your dog within minutes. The problem is that the ones inthe carpet and on the sofa will just jump back on and reifest him.
So you need to followup with Frontline Plus. This is the best treatment and will kill fleas and their eggs for a whole month.
You'll also want to kill the fleas in your house by using Knockout, a spray that you apply to surfaces. It kills fleas for months if my vet tech can be believed.
All of these are avialable at your vet's office.
Using Frontline every month is way cheaper than having to deflea your house, so you'll want to keep up with it monthly from now on.
And don't bother with flea collars. They only protect about two inches on either side of the collar. Your dog's neck will be flea free but the rest of him will be fair game.

You must do the house the dog and the yard at the same time with a good flea killer that kills both eggs and fleas. Of course you can't use the house and yard product on the dog. Get a good shampoo and then treat your dog with a once every month flea spot treatment. You put a spot of it on the back of their neck where they cant reach to lick it off. You should be able to rid yourself if you do all these things.

You should buy a frontine like product from your vet. Please do not buy the grocery store stuff as this has caused neurological problems and even deaths in dogs before!
Before you put the frontline like medicine give your dog a bath with flea shampoo.
Also if your dog comes inside- your house is probably infested too. You should sprinkle borax on any textile- beds, furniture, carpet. let it sit for at least 2 hours- then vacuum with a new vacuum bag- then toss the bag as soon as you are done vacuuming. The borax is safe for all pets and it causes the fleas and flea larva AND flea eggs to rapidly dehydrate which kills them.

Frontline is the best stuff I have ever bought. They advertise it like crazy, but nothing works better. Give him a bath first then put the frontline on him. They should all be gone within a few days. If you have alot of fleas in you home you may want to buy some spray or home flea treatment also. If not all the fleas are going to be in your home regardless.

He needs a full-body flea dip. Pick up some shampoo with flea medication in it from Petsmart or its equivalent, and scrub him down in the tub or outside with a hose. (He'll be fine as long as its above 70 degrees or so.) Once hes totally dry, buy some advantage or something like it from your vet. Its about 20 bucks a month and it works like a charm. If hes really infested, you'll also need to flea-bomb your house. Get your dog out for the day, bomb the carpets, and when you get back you'll have dead fleas. Good luck!

The capstar pill to kill fleas is also available at
http://www.jefferspet.com . Check your local pet stores to see if they have it.
Frontline and Advantage are good. I use an otc called Bio Spot for fleas. I've used it for over 10 yrs. I use it on all my dogs (3) and on all the rescues that I have had.
You might also want to give Benadryl for a few days to relieve the itching and make the dog more comfortable.
Here's a site with the dosage by weight.

Frontline, buy it from the vet. Don't use the junk you get at Walmart.
Frontline will eliminate them in a day, we have had fleas periodically with our pets.. Frontline is the ONLY thing that works, then I diazonon the yard as well with a Flea and ant killer.
Been there done that. We have a Yellow Lab as well and a gold cocker.
Follow the directions to a tea. Your done.

Only Frontline or Advantix will work. Both are expensive but very well worth it! You will just be wasting your money if you buy any of the Wal-mart/Target/Grocery store brands, because they will not work! Spend the extra money and get the good stuff. You will see results immediately! First give your dog a bath with a flle/tick shampoo, follow the directions on the container. Then use Frontline or Advantix. That is all. You will be amazed at how well it works and how long it lasts!
