I am new to DSLR (and a beginner in general). Does the bigger LCD, dust system, 9-point thingy etc worth spending more for? What I choose now will have to do me for years, as I wont be able to afford to upgrade.

If what you get now will have to last for a few years, economize on the body and spend the difference on a better lens.
The 18-55mm that comes with the 400D is cheap. Really cheap. It would be a waste of a great 10 mega-pixel camera if your had to use that lens with it.
So settle for the 350D and if you can, get the Canon 17-85mm.
400D + 18-55mm = $900 (as a kit at B&H)
350D + 17-85mm = $1100 (as a kit at B&H)
The 17-85mm is a bit weak from 17 to 24mm, but stellar throughout the rest of the range. And it obviously gives you MORE range than the 18-55mm.
So what would you lose with the 350D vs. the 400D?
* 2 mega-pixels. No big deal, because the 400D can out-resolve the 18-55mm lens. In effect, you're hardly sacrificing resolution at all, and with the better optics, you're gaining image quality.
* Faster AF. Sad, but worth the sacrifice. And the 350D is no slouch.
* Bigger screen. I can't believe you mentioned that!
* Dust removal. A very nice feature, but if you have the 17-85mm on the camera all the time, you'll hardly be exposing the sensor to dust in the first place. So again, no biggie.

My opinion is to go for the bit cheaper body and get an excellent lens. lens is the most important part of any camera - canon cameras are very good so if you get a little bit cheaper one does not mean that you are settling for poorer quality. Bigger LCD definitely is not worth paying more for. You will have to take good care of your camera anyway - as far as dust goes - get a good case and clean it only with the right cloth.
Also by rechargable batteries and a charger and you will save some money that way as well.
Good luck in you picture taking!

Canon 400D is a extensive step forward from 350D in many things. even nonetheless, it continues to be untimely to judje if new imaging sensor nicely worth it. in case you prefer slightly of threat, decide for a clean digicam. In some year, you are able to love or you are able to sense sorry approximately your determination. Or, you are able to circulate with tried-and-genuine 350D, even nonetheless, cost distinction between the two cameras isn't that lots as to allow for a staggering lens.

f you can afford it go for the 30d but if not the 350d with a good lens will be good, my sister is a semi professional and she had a 350d with a good quality sigma lens, she swears by sigma lenses as they are just as good quality but cheaper so you can go for a higher spec. have a look at some of her photos on photosig, which by the way is a very good web site as people critique your photos and you there's.

To be honest I would recommend one of the Nikons over the Canon. They are built better and feel more substantial than the Canons which feel rather plasticky. The Nikons have better lenses too. You'll notice that the majority of professional photographers (well all the ones I've seen) use Nikon cameras too partly because they are more robust.
