Early thought had the known world surrounded on all sides by a universal sea. The Atlantic was thought to be part of this sea, with nothing west of western Europe. In the Latin Middle Ages the Atlantic was called "Mare Tenebrosum", which translates as "Sea of Darkness".

A book about Henry Hudson's exploratory trips across the Atlantic by Donald Johnson was titled "Charting the Sea of Darkness: The Four Voyages of Henry Hudson".

Sea of Darkness -

The winter has come
A sea of darkness
Drowning my desires
In its icey depth
I raise my tired eyes
To watch the white sky fall
And through my tears of snow
I can almost see you
