Why do some people feel the need to preach the bible, attempt to discredit science, or condemn people to hell every time they answer a question? Does God keep a tally of people's internet proselytizing? Would it hurt just to chill out on the religious overtures? Do they think it wins converts or do they just do it to aggrivate normal people?

Last I checked, this question was posted in the section Society and Culture>Religion and Spirituality. It wasn't posted in a "believers only" or "christians only" section. Since my question is dealing with issues of religion and spirituality (regardless of particular religion), I thought this would be an appropriate question category. I'm asking about behavior, not particular beliefs. Your beliefs are your business, until you start shouting them from rooftops or posting them in public forums--then they become public and your positions become debatable. My beliefs are my business, and it's interesting that people assume I'm an athiest just because I ask this question (how would you know?). Responses to questions that I'm really asking about aren't just given in a religion and spirituality category; I've noticed these responses in all manner of categories including those that don't relate to religion at all.

I said "attempt" to discredit science. I meant science in the epistemological sense, not indicating any particular issue within science. You have to at least understand something before you can correct its mistakes.

Sure, you have every right to be here, as do I. You have the right to preach, or to worship Big Bird or the Earth Mother if you choose to do so. I also have the right to ask why people respond the way they do so consistently.

I'm not trying to discredit anyone's beliefs. I didn't say anything about the existence of God or the holiness of scripture, or any other sacred thing. I'm asking why the need to preach at total strangers on an anonymous internet forum.

Christians might feel compelled to preach, speak the word, etc. but do you who do it really do it consistently when you are face-to-face with people? On the bus or in the market? I think not.

Well, George, I don't know what you are attempting to demonstrate with the ill-conceived search "experiment" (your assumptions are ridiculous), and I'm not trying to use this as a debate forum. I really just wanted to see how people would explain this type of behavior. Along the way, I felt the need to clarify a few things (some of these answerers clearly misunderstood/overinterpreted the original question). That's why the "add details" function is useful.

Their bible tells them to do so and most of them read way too much into that. I say if they want to tell people about god fine do so but do it in a church or a bible study. Don't come to my door with that B.S. and don't come on the Internet and try to push their religious views on me. I don't push my beliefs on anyone and I don't want them to push their beliefs about god on me.
They think it is their "mission" to tell everyone about god. They don't realize that they tend to be rude and completely disrespectful. They also don't realize that just because they "believe" something to be true, that don't make it true. That only make its right for those that believe in it. Most of them also think that's its their free ride to their heaven if they do so.
***News flash for "jworks796..." This is the relgion and spirtual section. FYI NOT JUST FOR THE CHRISTIANS! get it right or don't speak at all! ****

Holy Crap! :) Looks like a couple of people got a little cranky at that one. You handled yourself very well though and I commend you.
Now to answer your question.
It may be that the question is unanswerable. lol I dont really know why. But I would guess it is because it helps clear ones own concience to preach to others about whence and where they should go. To feel the authority to send words of direction to another. And you are right, many, many of these poeple do not even speak of the Lord except on Sunday in church....unless they are faceless on yahoo answers. I imagine the proof with be in the pudding at the end of days when the antichrist comes and we must all either dash our faith before him or die. How many then will be shouting from the rooftops? While I hope many will, I know the truth is much more dire...this was foretold.
I really dont think it has to do with everyone else. But with themselves....the zealots I mean. Not all the Christians. I am a Christian. But I am not totally guilty of being a zealot. Not totally. lol
Anyways, I try to remember that the true message is Love, not bossing people around. But why am I talking about me? See?
OK u got an answer out of me. :)
Hopefully I didnt seem like the rest.

It appears that the facts do not support your question. The word, "god" appears under society and culture 67,467 times, which is to be expected, since that category includes religion and most of the people here would think that god has something to do with religion.
The word, "god" also appears in other categories, and perhaps inappropriately so. However, this is relatively rare and there may be quite sensible questions or answers about god and sports, for example.
Category frequency
=========================
science & math 1262
social science 1054
sports 613
arts & humanities 4048
business & finance 418
home & garden 159
pets 398
Now, let's take a word like "heat" which is a very science kind of word. Indeed it appears 14,986 times under science and math. But it also appears 525 times under society and culture, perhaps inappropriately so. Should we slag these pointy-headed geeks for trolling in the society & culture section with their thermodynamic overtures?
No, of course not. So it looks to me like this word "heat" appears only half as often in society & culture (an arguably inappropriate category) as does the word "god" appear under science & mathematics.
You ask some interesting questions. However I'm sure you're starting to realize that Yahoo! Answers is not a debating platform. I think it's a sort of free-form game of Trivial Pursuit.
If you find a satisfactory debating site/platform let me know. I'd be interested in having a look at it. There used to be one on the Utne Reader site.

"This is a "religious forum" you know. I could also ask why do all of the atheists come here - just to bug the Christians? This is for Christians, sorry."
Um the title of this section on Yahoo is Religion and Spirituality you dipstick, not Christianity. So anything having to do with religion or spirituality or lack thereof is fair to talk about. Always nice to see an angry answer from a yet misinformed Christian.

Christians are compelled to teach. One of the greatest teaching verses of the Bible is 2 Cor. 4:13, "I believed, therefore i speak". If we really believe the truths of the Bible, we will have to tell others about it. Look at Jeremiah 20:9 But if I say, "I will not mention him
or speak any more in his name,"
his word is in my heart like a fire,
a fire shut up in my bones.
I am weary of holding it in;
indeed, I cannot.
We have a powerful weapon, "the sword of the Spirit , the word of God" that we must wield properly ( Eph. 6:17). That word is "quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword"
(Heb 4:12) there is an urgency about this teaching. "Oh remember how short my time is" (psa 89:47)
Paul tells us to "Buy up the time, because the days are evil". (Eph 5:16)
we took God out of our schools, look what is happening now!

Because trying it anywhere else would get them a punch in the face or arrested for disturbing the peace. At least here the most they face is ridicule.

We preach the Bible because we are commanded to do so.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.
and as for disrediting science? we are correcting incorrect science
See: http://www.creationevidence.org/
and as for aggrivating normal people,,they do not understand, nor do they have the ability to:
1Cr 2:14 But people who aren't Christians can't understand these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them because only those who have the Spirit can understand what the Spirit means.
1Cr 2:15 We who have the Spirit understand these things, but others can't understand us at all.
