If you are an undocumented alien in the UK, not a citizen of an EU/EEA/Swiss country and working illegally, then you cannot gain unconditional legal residence ("unlimited leave to remain" ULR)) until you have been here illegally for fourteen (14) years.

Otherwise, legal status (but not URL) is gained in any of a number of ways: EU permit by marriage to a non-British (or dual-national) EU/EEA/Swiss citizen (but under current law, which may change because a court has said it's a violation of art 8(1) of the European Convention on Human Rights), you cannot marry in the UK unless you are a UK/EU/EEA/Swiss citizen or legal permanent resident unless you get a marriage visa or permission from the Home Office).

You could get permission to work if you have a rare skill, or if you are a sole representative of a foreign company, or if you are independently wealthy, or if you are a minister of religion or a journalist for a major news outlet.

If you marry a British citizen you can, in due course, get permission to live in Britain but you may have to go to your home country to get a visa. But under the "Surinder Singh" principle if you and your spouse live first in an EU/EEA/Swiss country for 6 months or so, you could avoid that.

You have three simple way to become UK resident, 1)Just Marry a UK resident and in this way you become the resident of UK very easily. 2) Get Work Visa and stay there for more than 5 to 7 years 3)Or live there illegally Better you can Apply for work visa while you are studying and in the mean time find some one permanent resident of UK and enjoy the rest of your life.

Stay in the UK until you are able to "naturalise" and become a permanant resident - i.e. obtain indefinite leave. You will need to make an application to the home office for this.

If you are working in the UK, you are presumably resident (and have a National Insurance Number). I take it you mean 'become a Citizen'.

live here for 7 years(?) marry a UK citizen...the norm. you can come here from the EU, wait the time and then apply for resident status.... or you could go to france and run back here through the tunnel..... we seem to let people who do that stay as long as they like

You should not be allowed a permanent stay until you have been there at least 7 years.
2 years is nothing,so you embarassed about your origin then.
