I know this is really tough, so it's good that you ahve the desire and motivation to take control of your weight. It gets tougher as you get older.
As several people already pointed out, you don't need a gym, as you can walk. The best plan is slow and steady. If you find it too strenuous at first, take only a 20 minute walk, then work your way up as your body gets accustomed to the exercise. Don't push yourself into a heart attack or physical breakdown. Do what you can and take the cues from your body, but try to do something every day.
If you want real motivation to break away from junk food, go rent or buy the movie "Super Size Me". This should be good to motivate your rommates to healthier habits too. Do you fix your own food, or eat out? You need to find a way in your environment to make it work or change environments. Choosing the salads at Wendys or McDonalds is good as a back up plan, but you'll need to restructure your eating habits. Personally, I hate counting calories and weighing food portions, because they make me obsess on the whole diet thing. That is not healthy either. If you can make a great salad, and throw anything in it, then use low calorie dressing, half the battle is won. You need to make a food plan that works for you, and it should include healthy snacks that are ready for when you might otherwise turn to that Big mac for a snack. Reward yourself if you stick to your plan, by going to a fast food place like McDonalds once a month.
you also might consider taking a suppliment called "CLA", but not at night. It's conjugated linoleic acid and it speeds up your metabolism naturally. You take it with food. At night it can keep you awake.
If you live in the country, now is the time to get out that rake and work on the leaves, as this will help you trim your upper body.
Do you have some kind of health insurance? If you are as big as you say you are, I wonder if it would pay for the gym or physical therapy. Please talk to your doctor about this.
Good luck, and if you e-mail me with some mailing address (it can be anyone's address) I can mail you my copy of "Super Size Me" for free.

All of the advice given is really good. Try to find other people in your area who are trying to lose weight and use them for motivation. They usually need motivation also.
Some tips that helped me lose 75 lbs.
- Cook healthy foods for yourself and the people you live with. Try a different recipe everyday. Good recipes on the food network website.
- Form a walking club with some people and share experiences. I found people trying to lose weight willing to walk the malls early in the mornings and some ladies found me on the slim-fast website
- Drink lots of water before you eat (it fills me up a little and I eat less)
- Eat 6 small meals a day...and only eat until you are not hungry anymore. Don't eat food just because it is there. (I still do that sometimes)
- Try not to sit around alot, volunteer with non-profit organizations, they usually have alot of stuff to do and will keep you really busy
Most of all, do it for YOU and your HEALTH!!
Nothing will happen over night. Just give it time.

Several answers to this question...
(1) you don't need a gym, go for a walk, do sit ups, go to the park, just get active, you don't need a gym membership. And, some schools let people use their gyms, and it is free, so you could try around for that. And there are programs out there for people who are loosing weight, that you could get for free. Call clinics, call hospitals, google it, there are organizations out there that will help you.
(2) As far as junk food goes, you just have to learn to control yourself, maybe take it a step at a time. when it comes to food, just buy your own, and if you cant afford it, there is a wonderful program called Food Stamps. And anyways, talk to your roommates, maybe eat in a different room. In all honesty, you can make healthy food taste great, and alot of times when you got this nice hearty meal and you look over at their processed convience food, theirs doesnt really seem to appealing anymore.

A little at a time....More meals to keep you away from bad snacks. ANY exercise (walk instead of riding, use stairs not escalators or elevators, park a bit away so you have to walk, etc) Don't punish yourself for lapses, that will only get you down. Don't get discouraged when you don't see results, they will come. Drink lots of water to keep yourself fuller and make junk food less desirable.Set small goals so that you see positive results. Remember, you didn't get this way overnight so you won't lose it all that way either.
Think of it this way, 1 or 2 yrs from now (?) you will be where you want to be or close. If you stop because it's going slow you will NEVER GET THERE.

I have to agree with Frank above. I wish I had read his answer years ago. I am working on losing weight now. 14 lbs. down and soooooooo many more to go. In only a few weeks I have created a routine that I even feel guilty when I stray from it. LOTS and LOTS of walking. Low calories/high fiber/high protein diet. I have a friend that I am competing with and that really helps. With three kids and a hubby hatlive off junk I thought I really needed someone to eat healthy with me, but I am doing pretty well now on my own. Good luck!

Changing your life style is most important when trying to lose weight. Your roomates may eat unhealthy but you don't have to and don't let it stop you. Bye your own groceries or make a list of the things just for you like fruit and veggies, i love carrot sticks. I want you to try this diet it's put out by doctors for health patience before they have heart surgery. It helps you to lose weight Fast and it's healthy. Sacred Heart Diet.com there's a soup that you make and you eat that the entire week at any time your hungry. Plus every day is different. Monday all fruit but bananas and all the soup you want. Check it out as long as you don't cheat they say you'll lose up to like 15 pounds! I've done it before and it really works. For exercise just walk around your neighborhood your work out in your room. Have stairs? there great for legs. Good luck. Try the diet!

walking will help its natural
go at night time with a friend as its not real hot. start off slow & short walks then increase as you get fitter.
you do the cooking if it's possible & only cook healthy food & only have treats once a month & even then don't over do it.
that includes junk food cakes sweets drinks etc etc
have small serves of tin fruit & trim custard strawberries even small cut up pieces of apple is nice with custard as is most fruit.
you can never say you can never have a treat that will make you fail thats why i say once a month if its not a huge treat .
good luck

You have the power. Just make up your mind to do it. Once food has passed your lips in sticks to your hips. I've done it a couple times. Went from 255 to 200 . Now I weigh 235 but I'm gonna make up my mind and lose it again.Low carb works for me but it is hard to stay on it. I've been reading books about hunger and that seems to be the problem. Eating when you are not hungry and eating late at night. I'm in the research phase of my third weight loss plan.

for one you do not have to go to the gym. for two it is your responsibility to show some self control over your own eating habits. a diet of 2000 calories a day 500 calories a meal at 4 meals a day is all you need to loose weight use a pad and pencil to keep track of the calories at each meal. as far as toning up. work your way up to 100 pushups 100 situps not crunches and 100squats a day 5 days a week no weights needed. you will look great in no time.
