Dandruff shampoo is best - not exactly aunt gertrude's home remedy. Also, I've been told that strawberry shampoo is helpful.

the best thing that i have used is hydrocortisone cream
rub some on your entire scalp or where the dandruff patches are. Put a bag on your head of some sorts and let it set for like 20 or 30 mins. Mine was so bad this past summer that I left it on for more like in hour.
Wash your hair like normal afterwards. Be careful to keep your eyes closed, it will burn if it gets in, not really bad but a little sting.
I did this last in early July, this weekend will be my only time having to do it again. So let's say it lasted a good 3 months.

Anti dandruff shampoos have hard chemicals which can make the hair thin and easy to break.
To be able to destroy dandruff, it is imp. to know the reasons behind it
Types of Dandruff
Dry type
Greasy or waxy type
Cause for dry dandruff
Poor blood circulation
Lack of nerve stimulation
Emotional disturbance
Glandular disturbance
Not producing sufficient oil
Treatment of dry dandruff
Scalp treatment (ozone treatment)
Herbal shampoo
Hot oil therapy
Use of antiseptic lotion
Henna treatment
Waxy type dandruff is mixed with sebum which makes the scalp itchy. If the scales are torn off, bleeding or oozing may occur.
Treatment
The best thing to do is to keep the scalp clean, and do oil massage twice in a week.
Herbal Treatment
Massage scalp with essential oils like rosemary, cedar, lemon and eucalyptus to reduce flaking itchiness of the scalp.
'Methi' seeds are also helpful in fighting dandruff. Soak them overnight, grind the next morning, mix in the juice of neem leaves and apply on the scalp .
In half cup of olive oil, put a small amount of camphor warm it lightly and apply to the scalp parting the hair straight and give a circular massage for the entire scalp.
Avoid fatty foods and red meat.

Boil a mixture of 4-5 dried thyme and two cups of water for 10 minutes. When the mixture cools down, massage it on the scalp and leave it for half an hour. Wash it afterwards and see the results. You will have a dandruff-free head.

Make a runny paste with your shampoo and baking soda. Scrub your scalp more than once, rinse and repeat 2 or 3 times.
Rinse thoroughly at the end. Apply and rinse conditioner after that, if you have some.
