we've been friends for a year and a half but i don't want to ruin that how can i look for signs? please help me

I have never understood why offering to be more intimate would be "ruining it" ... it's just a weenie excuse for cowardice.
Go on, tell him how you feel. Don't be demanding, just say, "I really like you. Give us a kiss!"
If he doesn't, don't pout, just deal with it then. No biggie.

First, find out who his closest friends are. Second, find out the girlfriends of those close friends of his. Third, get close to those girlfriends and see if they can help you talk to their guys about finding out if your guy is doing something(s) which are relationship "No-No's".
If his friends (hopefully responsible guys) value their relationships with their respective girls, they should/will help their girlfriends find out what your guy is up to...after these girlfriends -hopefully- agree to help you by talking to their respective guys.

it's better to be friends, that way ypu stand to loose nothing. just leave everything to time, because by confronting him you might just push him away.
