my country did many things for the humanity without killing anyone.your civilization is based on ours.and you should know that the most of the accomplishments that the americans think that are american, were created or inveted by europeans that they were living in america.for example thomas edison was a rich guy who was taking advandage of the people tghat they were working for him like nicola tesla.he is the original inventor of the lamp and of thousand other patends that the us goverment stole from him after his death.these were the basis for the next people that were "inventing".

People who say Americas greatest accomplishments are things like Freedom or Democracy or capitalism are fascists. America did not create these ideas. And recent history has proven that america does an incredibly poor job of spreading them.

TO OTHER AMERICANS:

America did not create the atom bomb. America was first to apply and test the technology.

Advanced Space flight??? Nope.
The USSR launched the first satellite and put the first man in space. Not america...

America did not invent fast food or sports or Music or entertainment (although an argument can be made that we reinvented them.)

America did build the first electronic computing machine. But to say that the idea for computing machines originated in America is a stretch. Mathematicians have been trying to build computing machines since math was started.

Often, we Americans are the victims of our own propaganda. We teach our children that we did create everything. It gives them a level of ignorance and arrogance that can be matched by none in the modern world.

Having said that, there is no doubt that america has made contributions that have changed this world.

My top 3.

1. Curing Poliomyelitis. The world suffered until america came along.
2. The Internet. The only win win situation ever implemented by the united states military.
3. Plastic. Yes I know about germany. But america recognized its value and delivered it to the world.

Politics aside, there are some things that america can be proud of.

The shot heard round the world.......We started it. yes, there were other tiny countries practicing a form of democracy here and there before us, but we did away with the notion that certain men had a God given right to rule us because of their bloodlines. America is an ideal. we started off with "all men are created equal" and are now struggling to make that ideal an reality. yes, there are other democracies and republics in the world and they have achievements too, but America is the place for me.

My country right or wrong. When right, keep it right. When wrong, make it right.

Uh, you are from Germany? What achievements do you have? Do you know that the United States helped build your country back up after World War 2? That was not cheap or easy and it was done by the victor to the defeated. Learn some history.

IT WAS America who won the war, we saved Englands a-$$(they were on there last legs) and Frances, u really don't know much about history, and the greeks? are you kidding me??? you have to leave that country just to get decent healthcare! we are only about 230 years old and we are the most powerful and prosperous country in the world, thats a HUGE accomplishment! every child has free schooling, anybody can go to college as long as you work hard in high school, we are a democracy and choose who is in office and who isn't, women can be whatever they want which is a lot more then many countries, why do you think everybody from all countries in the world migrate here?? everybody here knows people from all countries all around the world because everybody wants to live here! why do you think we are having such a huge immigration issue, why don't you come over here and see what all the fuss is about if you don't believe me

Look I wasn't going to answer this one but I just have to. to the in-breds that say America defeated Nazi Germany. Go and get your brains seen too. There were more countries in involved. Although I don't particularly like them, the Brits did a great job in the war. The Russians also , by opening the 2nd front, actually prob. did more than anybody else to end the war. So read your history you bunch of stupid half-breeds !

HaHa! We have a word for those Europeans living in America: Americans.
BTW I have been living in your country for the past four years. You seem to have enough to worry about( unemployment, your governments low key participation in the war in Iraq, b.o.).
Do YOU think the majority of Americans support the war? Why is it right to criticize us as a people for the actions of our government yet you deserve special treatment?
To answer your question I am in Germany because 60 years ago you people had a nazi problem. I am stationed here. I would never 'choose' to live in this crap country.
I guess you don't consider the defeat of Hitlers Germany an accomplishment, better if he'd won eh?

am not American but surely pride in ones country is one of the most important things a country can have period.

Oh and as for achievement the list actually is HUGE and then if you add in the achievements of the African American into that mix as well, light bulbs, vacuum cleaner, as well as the newer technology, space travel etc etc etc.

You take all the immigrants that came here bringing just a little bit of their homes and you get a pretty nice mix.

OH and to AFWIFE..................please read your facts regarding the British......as for saving our *** you helped hun, you helped but did NOT join in UNTIL Pearl Harbour was bombed we had yet again been doing it alone for some 5 years at that point, with EVERYTHING you had given the English to that point being CHARGED by the USA...........we finally paid that frigging loan off about the time that this cr*p kicked off the first time....so please if you have to be rude about a country try and at least base it on facts PLUS seriously hope YOU dont get sent to either the UK or Germany or even Japan with that attitude as trust me a slapping down will happen. I dont slag off your country dont start on mine sweetie

To begin with, I'm not American but I can outline a few world changing things America has done for humanity. Twice in the course of the last century, America has saved the world from the forces of tyranny and dictatorship, i.e, world war 1 and 2. America championed the brettonwood conference which has stabilized the worlds' economy since the second world war and brought about proper development in Europe. America has freely sold it's ideology of free trade and democracy to the rest of the world to show that is the best and most humane system of governance, the American style of free economy has been copy written by the rest of the world, there are too many for me to write about. In face of the global anti-American campaign, i think people need to re-think and thank God for America

Space technology
Advanced Aircraft technology (Including the first powered aircraft)
A powerful ally in war.
The internet: Something you're using right now!

They, like us Brits, have influenced the whole world. That's something to be proud of.

As I said before: I'm British, and I'm on America's side on this one.

AF Wife, you really are pushing it with the British comments. You did help, but you guys weren't the be-all-and-end-all. We had turned the tide post Battle of Britain. You're in a great nation, but don't get too cocky.
Never bad-mouth a friend. Ever.

I am amazed at what we accomplished in aerospace engineering and the beginnings of space flight. We had a nice systems of railroads at one time. I still like listening to Freddy King, Albert King, Bobby Blue Bland, Mike Bloomfield.
Martin Guitars, American literature, and maybe our Constitution - as it once was. We have some bedrock principles - of the 1776 variety that ought to be re visited. I loved last generation of main line American steam locomotives - the Hudsons, Niagaras, the Lima, AlCO, and shop built 4-8-4s, as well as a number of Mikados, Pacifics, and decapods.
Music, Charles Ives, The Grateful Dead, Glen Gould, Chuck Berry, ... The designs of engineers like Stephens, Douglas, and Dryfus. I think the era of the Ameican and British clipper ships was absolutey amazing. Edison, Ford, Goddard, Von Karman,
polymar chemists, ... where to begin?
APPLE COMPUTERS...Post Script, the Internet, the old Bell Labs and the transistor. Scott Joplin, Robert Johonson, Dexter Gordan, Thelonious Monk, Muddy Waters,
Writers like James Baldwin, Alex Haley, Faulkner, Twain, Dos Passos, Stienbeck, Hemmingway, - American cenema...but my favorite film is still Seven Samurai -
Removing President Nixon for malfeasance - at one time Democracy still worked and it may still.
Brown Vs Board of Education, Bob Dylan, Ralph Stanley.
I think there is so much to celebrate here. Ring Lardner,
Dorothy Parker.
I am amazed at the raw nerve, anger and defensiveness of so many of the posters here.

We surpassed the Greeks and Romans by 1790.
Look around you , do you see Jap , German , Russian tanks ?
Look up , see the airliner , the satalites that give you the weather forcast , GPS , the moon ( you been there? ) .
Look under the hood of your car , see all the American inventions .
Need emergency medical care , half that stuff came from here .
Watched a movie lately , or TV ?
Got anything made out of aluminum , we're the guys who found out how to refine it .
Heart transplant , lungs , kidneys , eyes , we're the world leader.

Now , how's life in wherever you are and what have you done for the world lately ?
