try finding some carpet remnants somewhere and make a scratching post.
they sell scratching mats and posts at the pet store.
if they don't use the post at first rub a little catnip into it and they should use it after that.
if you catch the kittens scratching spray them with a spray bottle quickly. every time you spray them they start to realize that it's bad to scratch in that spot. after a while they will only scratch where they don't get sprayed. ie... on the post or mats you put out for them.
good luck.

Get them a scratching post if you haven't already. We use this with our cats so we know it works. If your cat starts to scratch the carpet get a water spray and squirt it, it will run off and stop doing this. After they have received a squirt a few times they will know even if you shake the bottle to stop. By using this method you aren't frightening the cat, they just hate getting wet.

I also have two wonderful little fur balls...and the way I trained mine to not scratch anywhere but the scratch post was to sternly tell them NO! every time they scratched where they were not to....and till they got on to using the post they got a treat and praise every time I saw them use it, I also trim their claws regulary....Please do not declaw your cats it is a painful op and cruel (they literaly remove like the first knuckle on each toe) when they do it,which is why it is now illegal in some states.

I broke my three cats from scratching and ruining the carpet by using a spray water bottle. Everytime they started, they got squirted. Pretty soon, they realilzed what I wanted and stopped doing the nasty deed.

Cats don't like the smell of chamomile oil, try diluting some & spray the areas that they're likely to scratch, like the carpet and/or couch ends.

I took out my clear packing tape (the type you use to seal boxes) and sticky-taped lengths of it onto the carpet - just those areas my cat likes to scratch. The smooth surface the tape makes and the slight "krinkly" noise it makes when the cat walks on it is not at all conducive to cat-scratching exercises; I mean, the taped areas became instantly unattractive to the cat... When he got used to not scratching those places, I removed the tape.

have you not provided them with something they can scratch? cats WILL find something to scratch if you do not, they need to, as it is completely, permanently engrained in cat behavior.
get a sturdy scratching post, or two since you have two cats (putting them in different rooms will help). i recommend rope because not only is it a great material for them to scratch, but it doesn't resemble carpet and confuse them into thinking carpet is good for scratching.
in a last ditch effort (only do this once you have given them a real chance with a scratching post), try http://www.softclaws.com
i haven't needed them, as my cat now only uses her scratching post, but i've heard they are very effective.
good luck!

My kitty has been tearing up everything in sight, curtains, carpet and my couches. I went an bought softpaws from Pet Supplies Plus and they are awesome! They are little caps that cover the nail to keep her from causing damage to things she scratches. She does not act bothered by them, she plays and scratches things just like normal. She picked at them a little on the first day and that's it..... check it out:

Have you ever heard of something called soft paws? They are little cat fingernails that you glue on their nails then they cannot scratch, and its nicer than getting them declawed! Declawing is very painfull to the cat and its also inhumane. You can buy soft paws online, at softpaws.com or ebay. And other places. I really think you should try that. And the nails also come in different colors.
