I have been letting my father use my debit card, and now he's got me into debt. I should have never let him use it in the first place, but since it was his money going in and out, I saw no issue. To begin with.

I've not had access to my own bank account for months. Nor a chequebook, or any funds. The middle of September I said "18th of October, the account is closing."

I didn't know he was in so much debt. He didn't tell me anything, even though everything he does is legally in my name.

I want to close the account now; but I promised him the 18th to give him enough time to sort out direct debit transfers and whatnot. Now I know what trouble he's in, should I just close it, or wait another two weeks?

I'm sorry to hear of your dilemma.

Take your father along with you to the bank and get advice from them.

Once he makes good on the debt, close the account and start a new one.

Your father should have his own bank account and debit card and if he is unable to get one then he can use money orders.

This has been a good lesson in finances and credit for you....

Best wishes

I would never turn my parent in. I would try to pay back the $200 or more.

Call your bank today. Ask them how much you owe. Then if you have the money pay the bank or if you don't have it go to a different bank with a Credit Card and do a Cash advance.
Then go to that bank & pay that amount. Then ask the bank not to allow the debit card to use the overdraft coverage. It can be set up this way. It would be better to make payments to a Credit Card then be reported to Chex systems or a similar company.

Personally I would close the account now! Have you spoken to the bank about your dilemma? They may be able to help you out. Don't panic, close the account and keep your debt card in your purse.

Nice to see you got some helpful advice from other people, obviously they never make mistakes do they ??!!

dont know how you use a debit card to get into debt...it doesnt access credit. But anyway you give him 48 hours to make it right then go to the law.

WHY would you let ANYONE... even your father... use your DEBIT CARD?

You dug your hole on this one...
