Silverfish are considered very primitive insects. They are flattened from top to bottom and have a scale-like covering that gives them a silvery appearance. These insects are a pest in homes and in libraries, where they can damage books. They require very little water but do need a source of sugar or starch in their diet. Silverfish have long antennae and three long tail-like structures (cerci) on the end of the abdomen.

Silverfish is not a fish it is an insect. Silverfish are small, soft insects without wings. The abdomen has three filaments extending from it.Silverfish are not often seen by homeowners because they are nocturnal and can run very swiftly. Occasionally, they are found in bathtubs. They crawl in seeking food or moisture and can't climb out. These insects prefer vegetable matter with a high carbohydrate and protein content. However, indoors they will feed on almost anything. A partial list includes dried beef, flour, starch, paper, gum, glue, cotton, linen, rayon, silk, sugar, molds and breakfast cereals

Silverfish are common household pests. falling under the ‘insect’ category. They are gray or silver in colour. There are two kinds of Silverfish; .the silverfish is silvery in appearance and prefers ordinary temperatures, while the ‘firebrat’ has speckled appearance and thrives on temperatures that are 85 degrees F and above. They live near radiators, furnaces and other warm spots. Silverfish feed on substances that contain starch including cotton, rayon, cereals, books, and wallpapers. Unlike common belief they do not feed on woolens. Silverfish are carried into the house by cartons, papers, books & magazines that are moved from one building to another.

Now you know its not a fish. it is infact one of the most primitive insects. it's also called fishmoth.
it is a small, wingless insect. Its common name derives from the animal's silvery grey colour, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements, while the scientific name indicates the silverfish's diet of carbohydrates such as sugar or starches.
An eyeless species of silverfish, or a close relative, was discovered in January 2006 in caves in Sequoia National Park, California.
The favorite food of silverfish include glue, book bindings, photos, sugar, hair, dandruff, and dirt. Silverfish can also cause damage to books, tapestries, and textiles. Apart from these cases, the damage caused by silverfish is negligible, and they have no direct effect on human health beyond psychological distress to people who dislike them. Other substances that may be eaten include cotton, linen, silk and synthetic fibres, and dead insects or even its own exuvia (moulted exoskeleton). During famine, a silverfish may even attack leatherware and synthetic fabrics. In extreme cases, silverfish may live for several months without feeding.
So, one should be careful of them.
Silverfish can often be found under refrigerators or around a well-heated toilet, if the crevices in the floor tiles are large enough. It is also common to find them near the crevices of the wood that has been bonded with starch glue (from which they feed), especially where the wall and floor meet. They are quite shy and most of them come out at night, when there isn't much human activity nearby.
