Pheasants are the large game birds that are commonly seen around farmland in Britain. The male is brightly coloured and has an extremely long tail, the female is brown. Grouse are only found in moorland due to their diet. They are much smaller, the red grouse being the most common and have red above the eyes, the black grouse is only found in Scotland, they also have the red eye patches but are black almost all over with a bright white tail.
There is also willow grouse that are white but are not found in England.

They are two different families of bird, each of which has a number of species. The most common in the UK are the red grouse and the common pheasant.

Appearance: Pheasants are larger than grouse, and have a long tail. Their markings are different (see reference for details)
Habitat: Pheasants generally live in woodland, grouse live in heather-covered moorland.
