A man in a box by the track !!!

It's operated by a person situated close to the racing office, who aims to keep it at a reasonable distance ahead of the leading greyhound. It's manually controlled, which has one distincy advantage - should a greyhound get knocked over, and start running the wrong way round, it can be stopped. Its disadvantage is, as it's operated by a human, human error can occur and, should the distance between the lure and the leading greyhound reduce, it can cause the greyhound to slow up, and crowding (and a false result) can happen. Far be it from me to suggest it can happen deliberately, but I have owned greyhounds since 1982 and it does happen, sometimes, purely by accident, of course.

In Memphis we were sitting at the table they used in the movie "the Firm" and one of the track employees was telling us all about that movie, handicapping, and how to bet etc. And I asked him the same question. He winked and said when the dogs are set Ed pushes the button and the rabbit is off and running as the gates open. You've all heard the horn at the beginning of the Kentucky Derby well all we heard at the start of the first dog race was "HEERRRRREESSSS Rusty."Ed McMahon would have been proud. So in answer to your question,in Memphis Ed does.
