It is how you bring them up. I have a miniature toy poodle who's mother was a yappy little thing, my girlfriend had her. Mine has been brought up with attention, training and consistent 'rules, regulations' and constant positive reinforcement. This is what keeps a dog 'in-line'. I used to have a 130lb. oversized rotteweiller and I brought them up with the same rules. My poodle is a well mannered, 'almost barkless little companion'.

First of all, Basenjis are hounds. They are bred as hunters and enjoy the open spaces. However, this does not mean they can be kept in the backyard or in an outside kennel. They are pack animals, like all dogs. In the absense of other dogs, their pack becomes the family with whom they live. Basenjis are gentle, loyal and affectionate and especially good with children. In fact Basenjis should be kept indoors with the owner. Incidently, while Basenjis dont bark, they do sort of yodel.
I dont know of any other dogs that dont bark. But why would you want a dog that doesnt bark. A well trained dog barks only to express something. It is their way of communicating.
My advise... dont get a dog if you plan to keep it outdoors.

Having a pet only to force him to live outside all the time is not only cruel, unfair to the dog, leads to dogs with poor social skills and emotional issues but in many states is considered a form of animal cruelty and is punishable by fines and loss of the pet. All shelters and resuce societies as well as any decent breeder will not release or sell a dog or puppy to a home where the dog will be spending the majority of it's time outdoors. If you don't want a dog in your house at all, then you shouldn't own a dog.

You should never get a dog and make it live in the backyard. Dogs are pack animals and need to be with their pack. This just causes all sorts of nasty mental and behavoral issues, such as barking, digging, scratching, jumping, aggressiveness etc,etc etc. Just don't do it. You will end up hating your dog, and your dog will suffer.

I don't know much about non barking dogs. Why would want to have a dog only to ban to the back yard ?If you're going to have a dog live this way ,then don't get one .Dogs are pack animals and want to be with their pack ,not lonely and banned to a back yard.
