like other people have said, £20 is a lot or a little depending on how long it's meant to last you. regardless of this, i'd make lots of soup and also lots of veggie casseroles or bakes. buying dried beans is cheap and you can make both the above in big batches and then stuff them in your freezer for later on. if you're near a farmers market, then get your veg nice and fresh and in large quantities and the market holders will probably give you a good price.

I but fresh ingredients, like 2 pieces of chicken if I want to do a chicken stew with vegetables. Pasta is also a good for a budget. I buy penne pasta and a jar of mediteranian vegetables with sausages. That is a nice meal to have in the evenings. If you like pasta you can do all sorts of yummy receipes. I hope this helps you.

pasta and pesto , splash out on some pine nuts, reminds me of being a student.

so pack of penne £1.20p, Green Pesto £2.79 ( the good stuff ), Pine nuts £1.65 and 2 bottles of wine rose and white £14.00 and you will still have some change.

If it's for the week . Get lots of pasta and cheap green pesto, tined tuna , sweetcorn , mayonaise, baking potatos, rice , multi pack of chicken brests, tinned tomatoes and curry paste. Large bargin block of chedder cheese.

With this you should be able to cook various meals, from balti's, baked potaoes with tuna and sweet corn. Pasta bakes with chicken topped with cheese, chicken and pesto pasta, chicken and sweetcorn pasta bake , tuna and sweetcorn pasta bake. etc you can make a lot of stuff.

Good luck I had great fun cooking on a budget at uni.

I presume this is a weekly budget... Limit the amount of meat you buy - take advantage of BOGOF promotions and avoid ready meals - you can have a filling meal - e.g. pancakes for practically nothing. Use items like rice and pasta as a substitute for meats or serve less meat than normal.

Per day? week? month?

Pasta, rice, beans, cous cous, fruit/veg that's in season. Frozen meat/fish tends to be cheaper. Stick to own brands.

Buy ingredients and make your own treats ie cakes/biscuits.

Plant a little veggie patch or grow herbs on your windowsill to add flavour to cooking.

Avoid takeaways by making your own burgers with mince at home.

it depends on your taste buds, if you like spicy food then invest in a book called an indian housewifes recipe book by Laxmi Khurana, you can select recipes made from pulses and veggies which are cheap, nutritious and delicious, also cheap and easy to make.
