Santa Barbara isn't too far away and it's a nice place to visit. If you do some research, I'm sure you'll be able to find a fairly inexpensive hotel to stay in. Also, Solvang is just a little further away, but still within your 3 hour limit, and you can definitely find a cheap (but nice) room there. There are a lot of local wineries there (if you're 21 or older) and other points of interest. It's definitely something you can see all of in a weekend.

Another nice place along the coast is Big Sur. There's a hotel called "Treebones Resort" that's pretty inexpensive and there's lots to do (hiking, horseback riding, just lounging about at the pool-although it may be too cold for that depending on when you're going). Whatever you decide, good luck and have fun.

Napa Wine Valley (do somewhat prognosis on the suitable wine mattress and breakfast places) great Sur (Hwy a million halfway between SF and l. a., beutiful place to choose for a romantic getaway, verify the Ragged factor inn) you may get a effective seashore view room with a hearth Pt Reyes (marin county) a lot of oysters, pleasing lodges, seashores, and so on.

I would recommend Santa Barbara or Big Bear. They are all 1.5 ~ 2 hr drive from L.A. and it's low season so you'll find some great deals. Don't go to big hotels.. look for small but clean B&B.

South Beach, Miami is super cheap right now. Try the southbeachgroup.com hotels - My husband and I booked a room for the end of the month for about $120 per night - we're only staying 2 nights for the weekend. The hotel group has free shuttle service from Miami airport to all of the hotels. Also our flights (from NY) were only about $200-250 each.

You could also try San Francisco - the weather is great. Try the Kimpton hotel group - the rates are pretty decent plus you get loyalty points.
