The Greater Los Angeles Area, or the Southland, is the agglomeration of urbanized area around the city of Los Angeles, California. There are two "official" definitions, the Los Angeles metropolitan area consists of Los Angeles and Orange County only, the Combined Statistical Area (a looser definition of metropolitan area) is sprawled over five counties in the southern part of California, namely: Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County and Ventura County. It is all often referred to simply as L.A., especially by the residents of Los Angeles County and by outsiders. It is such a sprawling area that residents refer to broad general sub-regions. It is not always meaningful to refer to Los Angeles as a distinct city, and people outside of Southern California commonly refer to the entire region as L.A. even though there are five counties, more than 100 distinct municipalities, hundreds of neighborhoods, and more people than any individual state except for Texas, New York, Florida, and California itself. Although there is no true border to distinguish what is actually part of the Greater Los Angeles Area, many tend to classify the region as ranging from Ventura County to the southwestern area of San Bernardino County. One thing is certain, the region has been one of fastest growing regions in the United States for decades, first in the LA County area, then Orange county, and now in the Inland Empire. As of 2005, the official estimate of the population of the Greater Los Angeles area puts it at over 17.6 million. The California State Population Bureau lists the 5 county region as having 18.08 million in January 2006. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Greater Los Angeles Area has a total area of 87,972 km² (33,953 mi²), but more than half of this is the sparsely populated eastern areas of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
