My husband has the same problem ...

But you have to be careful and not assume that your back pain is chronic and from your spine. The minute you feel anything new or unusual you should go tell your doc. A couple of years ago my husband's back pain started getting worse. He thought it was the same old thing so he took it easy for a while and saw the doctor ... it took them forever to figure out he needed his gall bladder out because he kept insisting it was his back. He was very, very sick before they finally found out what it really was.

The lower back is a very unique integration of bone, muscle, tendon, and ligament.
One way to alleviate back pain is to arch the body, as people and animals do when they stretch to relax. Lying backwards so that the front of the body is stretched will further relax the spine, with the additional benefit of freeing discs and vertebrae from the normal downward pull of gravity. As the body stretches backwards, abdominal muscles tighten and strengthen, and therefore help to take more of the load off the lower back.

The arched position places beneficial pressure on the lower back that tends to separate the vertebrae, freeing up the nerve channels that flow from the spine to help restore the blood supply to connective tissue and the organs. Arching also induces a spreading or "fanning" of the rib cage to produce more vital functioning of these organs. Finally, the backwards arch places gentle tension on the front part of the body, which can be highly beneficial in cases of constipation and other intestinal complaints.

I have a chronic lower-back problem and I have a set of exercises that really help a lot. They include both stretching and strengthening exercises. I've put several links to good web pages with exercises for lower-back problems. I suggest going through those and trying them. Then stick with the ones that help. For me there's almost perfect correlation: When I'm doing the exercises regularly, my back is fine, but when I start slacking off, I get problems.

There is one method you could try to relieve some of your pain, it also works for arthritis.

Get a kick board and float around in a pool at least 1 hour a day. Just stretch out your body and relax, float around holding on to the kickboard. It loosens up stiff joints and helps with aches and pains.

Have you also ever considered trying back belts?

Good luck, my father is in the same boat as you, although he's a bit older. The swimming/floating thing did wonders for him

your doctors need to diagnose what is the cause of the back pain and treat it accordingly. It has taken nearly 6 years for doctors to diagnose that my brother in law has arthritus in his spine. At one point they implied he was imagining it. My brother in law is in his 30's. Go back to your doctor and get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. If your doctor won't help or can't help see another one.

Ladybug-- This is a question for your Doctor. Many things cause lower back pain from benign to serious. A Q&A forum is not the place for this kind of advice. Call your Doctor

have you tried a brace with a heating pad or ice packs in it. Something like that icy hot pro sport or therma care heat pads? I use them after lifting on my kids all day.
