I'm a relatively small, slim guy (5' 10", about 160lbs or 12 stone), which I think makes me a middleweight in British amateur boxing- is this the ideal height for this category?

Also my trainer is worried as he says I fight like a guy twice my size- I'm basically a real slugger which he says is at odds with the Amateur fighting style in this weight category- will I suffer? A couple of other fighters have said this may be an advantage as a heavy puncher might be a surprise to the people I find myself up against?

Thanks!

your trainer will teach you to work the ring take your time and pick the right punches then in fights if needed your natural fighting style will help with tougher opponents like the old rocky southpaw scenario good luck in your training hope to see you fighting on pay per view

Listen to someone with some experience - me !
Your a good height for a middleweight, your reach should be a good advantage.
If you fighting in the amateur ranks DO NOT SLUG, you will get no where. Amateur boxing is about technique, timing and finesse. My advice is spar with lighter guys, they will be quicker than you which will help you with your spred, accuracy and timing. You are a naturally hard puncher by you own admissions so strength training may not be necessary, nor is sparring with the big boys.
Don't go in there trying to knock the other guys head off or you will be embarrased when yu are twenty points down after 1 round !

First of all good luck with your boxing career. I boxing amateur for awhile when I was younger, but I ended up liking football (american) more.

I think I know exactly what your trainer is referring to about your height. Alot of boxer who are taller (6' and up) actually move down in weight to give them an advantage in reach. You being a slugger isn't bad, it's just when you are matched up with a boxer at like 6 feet he'll stay away and just try to get pts and tie you up and win in amateur fights.

Not to say you can beat him, this is just what you'll be dealing with when it comes to taller guys (trust me) especially when you tap them and they feel the power, they WILL run.

I'd say you and your trainer need to prepare for that more than anything else. How to move in behind the jab and land, Non Stop Head movement. Countering, Slipping punches. 3-4 punch combinations, balance, staying low and working the inside of taller fighters who want a way out.

Good luck.
