Very ticklish issue. I think it is matter of handling your wife through your in-law. Solution lies in seeking a job away from your in-laws' place of residence, if possible. You can handle her only through your wife. Love your wife and then see the difference. Stay away from critising your in-laws.

Mother in laws are harmeless enough, it's the stupid kids that can muddy the waters, she may want to comfort her grown child so she is right smack in your room with you wnen baby is having a hard time. Give here a little slack an patients so she doesn't do the wrong thing without understanding the implications

Praise more about your mother-in-law. About beauty, style and controlling the whole family. Even when she is kitchen. But more attention to be given to your beloved wife. There should not be any clash between these two. Try to act as if you are under her care and control.

A devil on earth. If she so becomes, just ignore her.
Tell your wife straight that, You would not accompany her to her place. If she chooses so, she can go by her own or drop near her home and pick her up when she is free.
Mother-in-law can be caring and also can be devilish.
But strategy has to be made to tackle her for the sake of your wife.

If shes being nice to you I suggest you leave it alone. If shes being a witch talk it over with your husband/wife and see if you can't work something out to say to her. http://www.thenest.com has a few articles on how to relate to a pushy mother in law.

Keep quiet, never ask questions if you are not free in your relationship, always listen carefully and answer in best manner, wait for your time to when she will give you a chance to talk , use your time properly and leave a impact on her about you, what kind of person you are.
