I saw a clip of this bout and wondered whatever happened to Wepner? I know it was in '75, so Ali was way past his best, but the tenacity of the 'relatively unknown' Wepner really struck a chord in his fight against the 'Living Legend' Ali (the TVs words, not mine!

Can anyone give me a run-down of the fight? Also any more about who Wepner was and what became of him?

Cheers.

the ali fight was coming towards the end of wepners career aswell, I cant remeber the fight to well but wepner was a decent contender in the late 60's anf 70's not as great as some but always a fringe contender.

he also took on sonny liston in listons last ever fight, wepner as always was cut up very badly, which was a real weakness for him, the fight was a real blood bath and well worth watching as liston really rolls back the clock and shows how good he was in that fight, although its quite hard to find.

also a litlle bit of trivia here, rocky balboa was based on chuck wepner

Wepner went on tour as the "Real Rocky", and is still suing or had sued Sly over payment and rights.

he was cut a lot....his nickname was the bayonne bleeder..he was from bayonne nj. he was out classed and over matched from the get- go but he kept trying. finally he should some promise in the 8th or 9th round with a hook to the body which knocked ali down...finally in the 15th wepner could take no more and fell to the canvas...ref stopped it
