Sounds like he suffers from bouts of depression mixed in with highs, Could be Bipolar. Ask him to go and see a doctor who can put him on mood stabalizer. He would also benifit from therepy. Maybe he can join a self help group.

It sounds to me like it could be many things, none of which are diagnosible over the Internet, least of all by those untrained as psychiatrists. I'm not sure if any psychiatrists frequent this place, and I would suggest that he see one. Here, we can only offerideas and speculation. Even doctors have trouble with his sort of stuff after interviews and long conversations. So getting him to a doctor is suggestion numero uno.

I have manic depression, and I also was often the same way. It is common for a depressed person (with nearly any type of depression) to fall apart whenever one small thing goes wong. It could be almost any type of depressiom. Get him to a doctor if you can. A good one will help.

It can be a number of things, he has an anxiety disorder though, form what you are saying, it may be that he's been stressed out as well as depressed. Or DID, Dissociative Identity Disorder. Look this up and you will see what it consists of.
Don't panic try to help him, you are doing the right thing, you are great for worrying about him. It sounds like he's gone through some major trauma in his life, perhaps his childhood. I'd like to mention some options on his treatment, I will email you.
(As some people are too negative, not anyone here right now) I rather do it this way.

Your brother needs change, he's just not in a good spot and sounds overwhelmed and stressed by his own life.
It could take a while before he figures out his life. In the meantime, its important to think postively, because that is the only way he will believe that change is possible and worth it.

You don't give his age, but I would say he is troubled.

It may be all external. I wouldn't plan on a wedding any time soon, but if you love him you might suggest he seek some counseling, and it sounds like his mom could use some as well.

You want to help. I don't know if you really can.

Could possibly be a chemical imbalance and if so, may need be treated with medication but if it's not - and it's more emotional, well, could work it out through writing ., talking to others.... and getting to the gist of the underlying factors causing his behavior

He is suffering from stress and depression. Get him to see his doctor and also just be there for him to let off steam when he needs to. Keep an extra eye on him.
