I don't know how common it is, but there has to be some way to get them down that is better than just plain. I have a preference for all things chocolate- but faced with the plain I tend towards cheeses of all sorts. I think if I had no choice but plain, I'd rather just drink the tea. I say tell boyfriend that it's going in your mouth, and you'll have it to suit you. When the Queen invites you to tea, you can always follow her lead, but I suppose she would provide a good selection of goodies to choose from and it wouldn't be an issue. I eat what I like ,how I like, and I leave others do the same. Aside from asking for decent table manners, I don't see as anyone has a right to ask more.

it's not common, in fact in a lot of restaurants you will get digestive biscuits with a cheese board.
If you are just eating digestives with butter on, then I might suggest a healthier snack, but from an etiquette point of view it is just fine

Certainly not. I'm as posh as they come and I love nothing better than a digestive with a nice thick spread of butter. I happen to know that Phillip likes to make them for Liz as her favourite 11.00am nibble too. So tell your boyfriend that he is being silly.

i'm American, so i'm guessing that Digestive biscuits are some form of what we here on the other side of the pond call a cracker.
well, we have no posh or common here in America, so i say eat what you want, and if your boyfriend is so hung up on social status that he would call you common for something so trivial, tell him to bugger off and find a better man.

It definitely is not....
When I was young (early teens) I remember that my Gran used to make digestive sandwiches, i.e. 2 digestives with butter in the middle.
But she also used to fill in the gaps around the edges with butter too, so there were no gaps between the biscuits anywhere. Although I do have do stipulate that they must be McVities Digestives and it does have to be Lurpak butter.
Your boyfriend clearly needs to learn about the finer things in life.

I think its just fine to eat digestives with butter, and am pleased to see i'm not the only one. My wife was beginning to think i'm a bit strange in this regard.
I'm not posh though, however I'm not common either - to me common is uncouth, is that what he means ?

One does not consider it in slightest common if one partakes the spreading of butter on ones digestive.

There is nothing common or upper class about any food, it is only peoples perceptions. Life is all about enjoyment, so if you enjoy the biscuits with butter, then go for it!!!!
(PS, I knew someone who ate tea biscuits with salad cream!!)
