The mouse pointer shows you where you are looking at on the screen and you will do something there; if you do not see your mouse pointer then you have to move your mouse in any directions on the mouse pad to notice where it the pointer is moving on the screen, then you stop moving the mouse when the pointer is in a spot on the screen where you want to direct your sight i.e. eye direction.in order to do something there, like typing a letter or a number, or clicking on a link on which the pointer is resting on.

Now, if you really cannot find your mouse pointer, then in MS Windows all you have to do is to press the ctrl key, then a diminishing concentric circle will appear for you to know where the pointer is, it can be outside the screen, so you move your mouse up or down or left or right on your mouse pad, and the pointer will get inside the screen and you will see it.

Now, the cursor is the short blinking vertical line indicating to you where you are intending to type a letter or a number or delete a letter or a number or delete an image, etc.

Hope this helps.

The mouse cursor, or pointer, is often shaped like an arrow or a small hand with the index finger pointing towards the top of the display device. The mouse pointer moves as the user moves his or her mouse and is used as a reference point to where the mouse is located on the display screen. To the right is a simple graphic illustration of what the mouse cursor may look like.

Also known as a caret, a cursor is a visual representation on the screen that allows the user to specify where they want text to be placed. Commonly, this cursor is a vertical flashing line more commonly known as a i-cursor.

When typing, a marker appears where your next character will be go. This can be moved with the arrow buttons on your keyboard.
That is the CURSOR

the Mouse pointer is moved by the mouse. If you ask this under the Software section, you may know pointers can be changed from being an arrow (Microsoft default) to fishies or ewoks or something even more irritating.

nothing. But i think a pointer could also refer to an external device used to point at things on the screen for example if you are giving a lecture.
