How long does a crappie live or what is their life spand?

Just asking, because it was a conversation between myself and another fisherman. He stated they only live for 4 years and I couldn't accept that because I have caught them at a very large size and it would have taken them more than 4 years to reach that size.

Depends on the variety. The Black Crappie around Lake Shasta in California get to be around 1.5 pounds. That's not very big. They live between 6 and 10 years.
