I work in the construction industry and have a very different opinion to the answers I have seen above.
Yes an architect has an element of art and finish compared to the Eng's function and method.
The greatest difference is that an engineer must sign off on designs (approve). These designs must comply with standards and safety, environmental, community guidelines / laws.
The architect then blames the engineer and others for not "getting" the design.
The look and feel of a building are the hallmark of a good architect. A great architect also makes it build-able.
A good engineer meets all design laws while still making it easy to build, within budget and on time.
If all this sounds like a circus, I can tell you from my front row seat it is. Excuse the poor English.

to put in simple terms
an architect is the one who gives life - like the foetus in a mother's womb and once it is born the engineer takes over and shapes it to its destiny.
An architect breathes life into the design by considering various aspects like proper lighting during the day, direction wind blows, shadows that may appear which finally leads to the positioning of the entrances, windows, sunshades etc..... These aspect gives life to the building as such giving an ambience which people enjoy during their stay. Added to this ofcourse the aesthetics like the shapes of structures, colours, floor types, fountains etcc...

architect is someone who plans and engineer is one who estimates the total cost ,goes for economy and safety factors.
architect are also desingers of buildings .they focus more on asthetic aspects and engineers are more towards safety and economy.
architect is more based on imagination, creativity,is more like art.
engineering is pure physics ,mathematics etc
