He is a railroader x 35 years and the trains are very loud and hard on his ears. He has a brother who is also a railroader and already has hearing aids and he talks about it as if his brother is falling apart when he needs them too. I adore him and would not hurt his feelings for anything, but dont know how to gently approach the subject.

He has been a railroader since he was 17 yrs old. He really is only 52 yrs old and yep, they give them ear plugs. You cannot imagine how loud those trains are unless you are on one. I think he neglects to put the plugs in all of the time. Imagine trying to talk to someone who cannot hear you with ear plugs in to boot. Then there is those darned goggles (safety glasses) all scratched up. Its a wonder he comes home. With that much sensory depravation, its a wonder he dont get ran over by an Amtrak.

If you approach the subject gently, he probably won't be able to hear you ...

After 35 years, it is unlikely he is going to be able to change much now, anyway. Don't they provide ear protectors at work ?
