They're lazy. Or they really like to be afraid, just like some like scary movies and get scared watching them. (Unlike some that laugh at how stupid the movies are.)

The fear of not knowing something is sometimes very great, but even greater may be the fear of knowing. Thus those who do not understand something and the fear hits them that they do not know something are sometimes even more afraid of what they could know that they do not know (because then their perspective, their worldview, etc, may be forced to change). Understanding comes in its own time, just like change. Change is inevitable so understanding will come at some point in time. Some choose to fight against the change and understanding others choose embrace it while most just go with the flow.

It is a basic animal nature to fear the unknown. All animals fear the unknown and humans fear the unknown more as they are highly social animals.
Once, the understanding, or acquiantance comes, the fear disappears.
Knowledge removes fear.

sometimes it is better to not know the truth about things, and to keep them a mystery is suspensful and kinda fun, and better not to know the secrets. Trying to understand what you fear is just finding out what you don't want to know, which brings us back to the first part of the question. it is actually more like a question that goes in a circle...don't you think? by the way, it sounds really "deep"...if you know what i mean..

Because the saying is so true. . .ignorance is bliss! Oh, but another comes to mind. . .the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Until a person is open minded enough to ask the difficult questions about someone else, they're destined to be misled and misinformed.

Proverb:28:14: Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
Psalms:118:6: The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

When you understand what you fear, there is a chance that what you fear will be justified in its hatred of or malice toward you, and thus you would understand that you are validly worthy of hatred or malice, and understanding that might amplify your own barely restrained self-hatred and destroy you.

Or so it seems.

exactly! good question and i have to say that its not human nature, since there are people which CAN understand that which they fear, and those who are just to afraid and "conformed" to their shells to get out and explore the unknown ocean of fear which looms inside our heads.

Because a piece of their heart goes into that unknown, and they fear they won't be able to get it back.
