VOX is an acronym for voice activated transmission.

It means that the radio picks up on the sound of your voice and begins the transmission.

VOX stands for voice operated relay, I believe. That means you do not have to key a mike to transmit ... you can just talk into the microphone (other loud noises will key it also so if it is real noisy where the radios will be used, it is probably not the answer).

commonsense's "you do not have to key a mike (sic) to transmit"
is unlikely to make much sense to someone with no knowledge or experience of radio transmission. The lay reader won't understand the use of the word "key" as a verb - it is specialist jargon.

Much better to use plain English, e.g. you don't have to press a button to transmit.
