I think the real reason boxers make the sign of the cross after a bout is because they are thankful that they did not get the hell beat out of them! As for thanking god publicly to the media, I think it is out of ignorance, obviously a loving God would not condone such activity. It is also a weak attempt to convince the rest of us they are good people so as to justify to themselves that the brutal act that they just committed is okay.

God created man to be different from women. That is why most women and all enfeminate men will never understand boxing. I personally think boxers are thanking God at the end of the match that they are not cowards. All matches that are properly matched have the potential of seriours injury or death. Properly trained atheletes rarely die from these matches. Improperly trained or improperly matched exhibitions are even more tempered by the possibility of a TKO so the person doesn't get seriously hurt. The opponent also has the right to give up. The trainer can throw in the towel. Either way, a man in touch with the way God made him does not make him a hyprcrite, it makes him a real man.

When Jeff Gordon rubs Dale Jr.at 188mph, when athletes like Jason Collier, Lyle Alzado or wrestler Eddie Guerrero purposefully ingest steroids to be better or at least competitive in their respective sports, when a driver like Michael Park gets behind the wheel knowing full well the speed he'll need to win could cause a fatality, etc etc etc. They all have something that got them to that level sadly some need to boost that by taking harmful substances.
Like those mentioned boxers are athletes, the allegation that boxers beat each other senseless is so naive and asinine, the statement shows that the question is being asked by someone who knows nothing about the sport, NOTHING!! In every professional sport (or sports entertainment) they are all in it for money. When a person goes to work and the possibility of a raise is looming does the employee kick off his/her shoes put them up on the desk and say "ah who needs money I'm relaxing today. You guys can bust your humps to get the extra cash", in your "fantasy" world maybe not mine.
When a boxer shows that he is aware of a "higher power" and thanks his God, he is thankful he wasn't hurt, his opponent wasn't hurt, for the talent he was blessed with etc. I have been a fan of boxing (and fought as an amateur for almost 5 yrs) and I can't recall a boxer looking into the camera and saying "thank you lord for all the cash I'm gonna get" Again this may occur in your pseudo-world.
You are obviously not a fan of the sport so why not do fans like myself a favor and go play with your shuttlecock (badminton). Because your opinions and observations are akin to "grasping for straws" or looking for a verbal confrontation, if so go to a sport you posses even a rudimentary knowledge of, boxing isn't it.

It's impossible to answer this question because God doesn't publish a book of which prayers work best. And I don't think that He takes favorites in boxing matches. He already knows what the outcome will be.

Bring back the days of the Roman Colosseum and i bet these people would not want to fight no matter what the pay. In Roman times most of the Gladiators were slaves and had to fight for their freedom , though not many were that lucky. most were killed by other Gladiators or were killed by wild animals in a blood Orgy attended by the citizens of Rome. this country has slid down pretty far, not that far YET. but we are getting there. look over your shoulder, we could be next.

They thank God because everything they trained for paid off. Just because they are boxers doesnt mean their damned to hell. Its a sport and its a job. They are glad that he blessed them with the talent to acheive victory. Have respect for the sport man. Have respect for the boxers.

This is an awesome question.
I'm going to assume that they thank god for their "talent" in the ring and then for the huge amounts of prize money that they will procede to go roll around in.
Meh.
And who knows, maybe the cross thing is just a guise when in fact they are thanking Ares, god of war.
