By their sense of direction. Much like a compas does when you are out hiking and depending on it to tell you which way NORTH SOUTH EAST and WEST are.

These birds have an amazing memorey.
They use the sun usualy to navigate home.
I found a racing pigeon on a dark cloudy day, I brought the pigeon to my house and let it stay so that it could restore its health and get a good supper.Later that week the sun finaly came out, the pigeon flew around my house all the cloudy days but when it was realy nice and no clouds it flew back home.
Pigeons do have great eye sight.

This question was asked in our local pub to a pigeon fancier. His answer was quite simple, he asked how we found our way home at night and suggested that the pigeons do the same.

they are actually very clever animals, and nowhere near as stupid as humans think they are! They have great eye sight and navigate there way back by smelling out the sh1t they drop out about every 30 seconds!

Something to do with magnetism as they can get lost if there's a magnetic storm. Others use an A-Z, a compass worn round the neck can help too.

Truth is pigeons have great vision, they use sight to recognize landmarks, similar to what humans do.
