My kids have been picking up after themselves since around 2. By 3 if they left anything out I took it away and put it in a box. When they could go a whole week without leaving anything laying around after "tidy time" they got all the stuff in the box back.

Start encouraging it immediately by modeling the behavior...having them "help" you, even as toddlers, will make it easier when they're older. Also, set a good example by keeping your own things tidy to avoid a double standard. Kids will do whatever is expected of them if you go about it fairly and praise them when they do well.

as soon as he starts walking and playing with his toys...when he's finish playing you have to teach him that he needs to put all the toys away in toy box.you help him,but as he gets bigger you help him less.by the age of 5 he should be picking up toys on his own...same goes with his dirty clothes
it worked with my son...
