To forgive takes away the hurt and gives you a peace of mind and the courage to move on whether that person doesn't or not. We can all be a better person by forgiving someone whether they apologize or not. God honors a forgiving heart. he helps us to move on with our life when we forgive.

You don't have to forgive if they aren't really sorry, but you could also forgive without they asking for it when they know they're guilty. And if you can really mean your forgiveness, and they know they are guilty, it makes you a greater person on their eyes.
You know something it's worth to give forgiveness when the guilty party know that is something not easily forgotten. Some forgiveness-es have to be done silently, though.

When Jesus was on the cross, He said: 'Father, fogive them, for they know not what they do'. Those people were not exactly apologizing.
We forgive people for our own spiritual, emotional (and sometimes physical) health. Reconcilaiation is another matter. it takes one person to forgive but it takes two to be reconciled. Often reconciliation takes much longer.
Did you know that many of our emotional, mental, and physical problems today are caused by buried hurts that we have never forgiven? When we were small children we needed to 'forget' certain traumatic events, for our own protection: we were not able to handle them. But as adults, we need to deal with those memories, bring them back and forgive those who have hurt us. so that we can be really free from the emotional and mental consecuences.
This even applies in the case of physical and sexual abuse. But this does not necessarily implyy reconciliation. You can sometimes forgive something and still report it if you feel it is necesssary in order to protect others.

Forgiving someone is something that a person does whether the other is sorry or not...and everything that you feel was against you needs forgiven

Forgiving someone is not so much for their sake as it is for yours. Forgive all trespasses, leave their guilty conscience to them to figure out. Just because you forgive someone doesn't mean you should trust them. for example: If someone takes money off your table because you lend them a spare key, forgive them, but maybe they shouldn't have your spare key. If they are not sorry, that is their problem if you have forgiven them
