Whiile the few go off to Iraq to do what soldiers have always done, and the rest of the country go to the Mall to shop patriotically, the White House and its Believers (for to be a firm Republican has become a form Faith) remain in a "Sate of Denial".

After all, the most terribl;e costs of the Iraq folly -- unstoppable stupidity, unintended consequences -- will be borne by others, by future politicians, by the next generation of citizens who have to pay back the Chinese and others for the federal debt.

As for immigration: the problem is largely America's fault too: more unintented consequences. This time of NAFTA: America's free access to Mexican markets for its corn and other agricultural products, heavily subsidized and putting Mexican farmers out of business. So desperate farmworkers migrate north. And many of the maquiladora factories which once provided jobs are not viable because labor is cheaper in China (where pollution is uncontrolled, the environment is irrelevant, laws are unenforced, the minimum wage is peanuts or nonexistent).

Immigration, another hot-button issue, more than anything else is dividing the Republican Party between those who profit from immigration (businessmen and farmers who want to keep wages low in a Marxian fashion) and those who want to preserve American culture and long for the lost "strong and growing" middle class. There are unintended consequences for stopping immigration too: food rotting in the fields, angry farmers. (And closing the border makes those Latinos already in the USA loath to leave lest they be unable to return.)

Yet, like Britain, immigration's impact on culture and politics can't be "ignored". Where I live, Switzerland, a referendum just passed with the approval of the Government to further restrict asylum seekers and migration by non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens.

Hope that helps. I've listed some references below in case you have a serious interest in the question.

there is not any connection between 9/11 and Iraq. The attackers have been Saudis ordinarily. Its sorry but America is full of dumb people that let the TV and stars make decisions for them. Its sad when many high school students don't know who the President is or could not pick out Jesus out of a line up. We live in a "C" average America that every year is getting dumber. Many Americans are more worried about what Paris Hilton is wearing that the War in Iraq.

Immigration isn't that big of a problem, the gov created a false problem and the media carried it through, anytime the gov has screwed something up or they are afraid of getting into hot water they create a diversion to take our thoughts away from the screw up!

Immigration is just another political ploy just like abortion and gay marriage. If they do not care that people live or die do u think they care about abortion. Its all about elections.

What can we do about Iraq, right now, since we started it?

What should we do about disaster preparedness that is the slightest bit controversial?

And that leaves immigration.
