Guns were banned entirely in San Francisco up until June 2006 when the San Francisco Superior Court overturned the ban citing the 2nd ammendment as its reason for the decision. In California, either a city police cheif of a county sheriff can issue a CCW (carry a concealed weapon) permits to regular citizens allowing them to carry a fully loaded weapon on them at any time. This is what you would have to apply for if you want to carry a gun while working working security. However, I'm almost possitive the SF police cheif or the SF county sheriff would be very reluctant to issue very many CCW's based on the fact that they would probably lose their jobs based on the very far left leaning voting population (sheriff) and the liberal city politicians (chief). I have read that even before the gun ban there were only about 5 CCW permits issued to non-law enforcement personel in the entire city. I would call the sheriff's office and city hall to ask about getting a CCW, but I'm afraid you might be about of luck.

You do not need a license to buy a firearm. If you need it for the purpose of security guard, all you need is a guard card with firearm class. Normally the company provide that for you.
