Say that the guy then calls the girl up because he says that it's bothering him that she's probably lying to him and he wants to trust her. He feels that he needs to establish trust, even just for a friendship. he tells her he does this with guy friends too? What the hell is going on....

He doesn't sound to keen on her does he.
Putting all sorts of obstacles in the way.
He may not be up for the challenge or may not think she is worth the effort.

He sounds mentally screwed. She should not get involved with him, he's testing to see how far he can push her.
Most likely his trust was bruised pretty badly in his life. Remember this: No one can help him unless admits that he needs and wants help.
He has the characteristics of someone who could hurt a future partner. He'll continue to look for ways to "blame her" for anything that happens in his life. He has not learned to take responsibility for himself and most likely never will. Back away, real quick, and don't look back.
NEVER EVER feel desperate enough that you think you can handle a "fixer upper", because he CAN'T be "fixed".

I'd say it was very likely the other way around. It definitely is a relationship that will be an extremely tough trail ahead. My other guess is that you are the "person."
