I wish to know how many here have become atheist when they were raised in a Christian home. I am one of these people and I want to see how many more there are.

Chad, I became an atheist about a year after high school. It wasn't the hypocrisy of Christians that turned me off to it, it was the fact that most Christians don't criticly think about their beliefs. They believe because they want to believe. At that time I was just questioning and doubting. Once I got to college, I had to take 2 semesters of Biology for my major. The vestigial organs argument was really the deciding factor for me. Once a person believes in evolution, so many things about religion come to light. The world just makes sense in the context of evolution. Why we lust, why men want sex more than women, how religion was a way to make sense of natural phenomena before we had enough scientific info. Someone inside the church can't see, and I didn't see until I accepted evolution, but once I did, I'm telling you so much about the world just clicked in several weeks. Read "The Third Chimpanzee" by Jared Watson if you'd like to know more.

I'd be interested in knowing what happened in your life that brought you to this point. I understand how hypocrisy by so-called believers can turn some people off to the notion of God, but that might not be your story. Post more details if you would. Feel free also to drop me a line at chad@jesusfreak.com. I won't cram God down your throat, I'm just interested in knowing more about where you're coming from.

You americans are so funny, i cant believe how backwards you all are. You have the most money, technology and resources and yet you still think theres an old man with a big grey beard who created the planet out of clay and hydrogen (or whatever). I too was surrounded by this stuff when i was a kid, until i was old enough to make my own decisions and cast these fairy stoiries to the wind. EVERYTHING can be explained by science to a much more concrete extenct than any religion ever could.I think as soon as you realize for yourself that these stories just dont add up then i dont think that believing something with absolutely no evidence that it is true is possible

A well known atheist is Charles Templeton, of Ontario Canada
He was a friend of Billy Graham's at one time. He became an atheist.... Yet Lee Strobe was an atheist, and also an experienced reporter, became a christian due to investigation on his part. Praise the Lord!

Same here. I made the gradual progression from Christian -> deist -> agnostic -> atheist. I have never felt more in control over my own thoughts and life in general since I took my mind out of the cage that religion keeps it in. Logic and reasoning is the way to go.
If the Lord is your shepherd, what does that make you? A sheep.

I was brought up with love and care in a very christian household. Why, everything i did was a direct result of god and his will. I was taught that if I live good, I will have a good life.
Then I gained a brain.
Im an atheist now, and instead of holding onto stories...I persue my own ultimate knowledge. Nice to meet you.

I started out Southern Baptist, then Disciples of Christ. It was thirty years before I became a Unitarian Universalist. I'm a theist but I respect the rights and intellect of atheists.
