the thought of committing suicide is not hereditary, but the depression can be. My heartfelt sympathies are with you for the loss of your mom and nephew but again please understand when I say - thinking that you may feel the way they did can promote a sense of hopelessness and depression - so what you can do is honor their lives by keeping a tab on your feelings (so you can catch signs of depression) and go out of your way to be positive in life.
You may be having negative thoughts because you are mourning, what you have been through is most definitely very very painful, don't confuse the pain of loss with the pain of having to live (that's what most suicidal people think - they just cant do life anymore). God Bless you and I hope you get strength from the people around you.

Committing suicide is not hereditary, but some factors that might make it more likely can be. Consider having a conversation with someone at a suicide hot line. Since it was your mom and newphew, I think it is less likely that heredity played a roll than if it was your grandmother or grandfather and your mom.
But I'm giving you an educated guess. This is important enough to contact a pro.

It's definitely something that you should be aware of in everyone else especially yourself. I imagine that most of the people in your family must feel some sense of guilt or responsibility for having not involved themselves enough to know just how depressed those two were. If it happened at relatively the same time, it probably was even harder to notice. It's not easy to deal with anyone's death, and that they were suicides makes it twice as hard because all the same questions pop up- like, why?
The fact that you are able to just talk about it at least online, if not also in person shows that you have the ability to overcome and grow beyond it. If you think about depression as if it was a physical illness and not just an emotional one, it might seem a little easier to handle. In a lot of ways depression and just about every other mental illness is a also a physical illness because we treat them with medication the same as we could for a cold or a virus. In fact, doctors used to think they could do surgery (lobotomies) to cure mental illnesses, so I find it kind of strange that just because it's in the mind that there is some kind of social stigma against mental illness, as if it wasn't real. Just because there is no way to locate a thought doesn't mean you didn't think it.
Please remember as Rainer Maria Wilke said "to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart" and to "love the questions themselves as if they were something precious locked inside boxes behind doors of hidden rooms" (sorry for the paraphrasing). Corny, but you know what I mean. You have to constantly challenge your mind with ideas, to inspire yourself, and feed your ego at least once a day.

If you think about the hereditary of 'depression' and suicide in your family, it WILL make you obsess about it, so try to live life to the fullest and best way you know how.
You also should seek councelling and/or some kind of therapy to help understand the family issues and how it affects you and living your life.
If you're active and are healthy and live life in a positive way, you should have a great advantage in overcoming mental illness and thinking about suicide.

Not necessarily suicide, but the tendency's of depression that may lead to suicide can be hereditary. You should educate yourself on the subject of depression. It is a treatable condition, and if you are prone to it, treatment can mean the difference between living well and a living hell.

Because you know the pain that suicide can bring to others, I don't think you would do that to others or your children. Be aware of Depression and that it can be hereditary. My husbands dad commited suicide. My husband would never put anything like that on his own son.

depression and mental illness is thought to be hereditary .. suicide is not. suicide is a conscious choice to terminate one's life .. having depression and mental illness is not a choice.
i'm sorry about your mom .. that has to be so tough on you. i had a brother who took his own life ... it's very sad.
