If you're shots will be no more than 100 yds, I'd suggest a .22 hornet or a .17 anything further than that and both rounds run low on energy, but within that range limit, both should be potent, accurate and fairly quiet. If you will have shots that surpass 100yds, than any of your .22 centerfires are a good bet. If the majority of your shots are at 40yds or closer, I'd consider a 12GA.
Good luck and be safe

I once shot a rabid coyote at close range with a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington using the 200 grain Winchester Silvertip bullet. My first shot struck the coyote just back of the right shoulder and was through-&-through. He promptly started chasing his tail.

I jacked another bullet into my rifle and fired again. This was a shot at a 'moving target' and went through the coyote's mid-section. The coyote stopped, sat and started licking the exit wound.

I jacked another bullet into my .35 Rem but before I could fire a third shot, my friend Smitty popped him through the shoulder with his .30-06 Springfield. The coyote dropped like a rock. Think that's the end of the story?

No. We started walking up to the 'dead' coyote and to our astonishment IT TRIED TO GET UP! A fourth shot rang out from a .357 Magnum and the coyote was down for keeps, shot through the head by Smitty's son Paul. That said...

For coyote? The .22 Magnum is a popular choice but may be a 'stretch' at a hundred yards. If you would resist the temptation to also shoot, oh let's say... deer, why not consider a Ruger Mini-14 in .223? The Ruger Mini-30 might serve you better for this task. It is definately a 100 yard gun and shoots the more powerful 7.62x39 NATO round. Although ammo is getting harder to find, the old US M-1 .30 Caliber carbine is another good 'coyote gun.'

Unless you are keeping the pelt why not use the .243 Winchester? It is a 100+ yard rifle also suitable for deer when using the proper bullet type and weight.

It really depends on your intent.

If you wish to hunt coyote for the pelts, I’d recommend a small caliber weapon. A 243 Win would be at the high end for this. I think a 223 Rem would be ideal. It is a very fast round, cheap to shoot, and has a wide variety of ammo. A 22-250 Savage is also a great choice. Some people do not like this round as the recoil causes the person to lose sight of the animal through their scope. This probably wouldn’t be an issue for coyotes, but it is for smaller animals like prairie dogs. I don’t have much experience with the 17 caliber rounds, but a 17 Remington maybe something to look at (I’d ask a coyote hunter or a gun store owner about this one).

If you are looking to simply exterminate coyotes for the sake of killing (which I don’t endorse, but to each their own), just use whatever you can get cheaply or whatever you have lying around. Pretty much any center fire round will do. A 30-06 for instance is a little large for coyotes, but I’ve never shot something too dead in my life. I do not think I’d go after a coyote with a 22 rimfire. I’m sure it has been done, it just wouldn’t be my first choice of rounds.

Best of luck to you.

I'd opt for a .223. Its cheap to shoot and good to 300+ yards. If you knew 100 yards was about it and you want to limit the noise of the round and distance it can travel, I'd be hard pressed to pick a .22 Hornet. A .243, .257 Roberts, or 25-06 would be nice if you thought you might want to deer hunt as well. I have a .223 and a .204 Ruger and like them both very well. The .22-250 is also a really nice round, and if I hadn't got such a good deal on the .204 I would be happier with the .22-250 myself.

Personally I shoot a 25-06. I works extremely well and is a very versitile gun. For varmit hunting I use a 95 grain bullet and I use a 115 grain for deer. If the only think you are going to use it for is coyotes I would go with a 22 mag. It would tear the pelts up as much.

get an AR-15 .223 Rem/5.56. full stock or collapsible with 16 or 20 inch barrel, and get a scope. i would recommend getting an A3 flattop, and just putting the scope on the mount there, instead of mounting one to the carry handle.

.22 and .17 would be good for coyote, but .223 is more powerful, faster, and better. plus you get 30 round magazines for AR-15's so if they run, just unload.

OH yeah and F U C K the guy taht said guns are dangerous. good job at failing to answer the question you dumbshit.

I would suggest either a 222 or a 243 caliber rifle. Good flat shooting rifles. Or maybe a 270, an ultimate flat shooting rifle.

Well depends on what kind of terrain your hunting.I've used 22mag for years but went to 17hmr for awhile and now I'm using 223 rem.The 223 rem. so far has out performed all the rest of them. But I never had any trouble with the Marlin 22 mag.The 17 HMR. just does not have enough lead for my taste.

any of the 22 center fire calibers would work great, a 17 rimfire is a good choice, but must keep it close. a shotgun with oo buck or #4 shot works well, but you must keep it close.,
