Ok, I had my surprise bridal shower on the 1st. I have so much stuff, it's insane, and a lot of repeats. For example, I got three can openers (I only had 1 on my registry!!). The only one that came with a gift receipt is the one I want to keep.
What do I do with the stuff that I don't want? I'm not worried about getting money in exchange for the gift, and two people that I know recently had house fires that destroyed their belongings. Would it be wrong to give them stuff that I don't need? (I'm already giving one friend all the plates that are being replaced with my new gazillion-piece plate and dinnerware set). If that's not nice, or poor ettiquette or whatever, what do I do with the gifts? Will the store take them back with out a receipt?

Most stores will take things back with out a receipt, but each store is different. And I think that your idea to donate some of the things to friends who lost everything, is a really sweet idea. And no one that gave you the gifts will know which item you gave away. And they should feel honored that you want to help people. Besides, it is better that someone get use out of them, instead of them being stored away some where un-used.

I hope you realize that you may be married for more than a few years! Things wear out, things break - and in a few years when money is tight and you have a few kids running around your ankles and the can opener breaks down, you are going to be very happy to run out to where you store stuff and pull that never-used can opener off the shelf and USE it! Honestly, I have been married 17 years and am still using "new" stuff from the wedding.

First thing, write and mail all your thank you notes immediately. Do not mention you are geting rid of their item or returning it.

Yes, you can re-gift things if you do it discreetly/strategically. You might also consider donating some of the things to charity and taking it off your taxes. Sometimes you CAN find stores that will do returns without a receipt, but you will just get store credit, not money, usually.

I would try talking to your friends about it. Explain that you got several duplicates and that you would love to see their gift go to good use instead of being stuck in a cupboard gathering dust. And if the friend is hurt, it's on them. I think that they would rather see it go to good use than not. Or ask them if they saved the reciept and give them the option of returning the gift and getting you something you could really use. I really believe the best policy is to be honest. After all, if your friends, they should understand. Congrats on the wedding and good luck.

I think you should give it to the ones in need.. A lot of stores wont take things back without the receipt so you might as well give them away rather than them collecting dust in the back of your closet.

Most stores will take stuff back w/o receipts but give you a giftcard/store credit instead of cash. Also, if you got multiples of something you don't need multiples of, it would be great to donate those to someone in need.

Walmart will take stuff without reciepts, I dont think it would be in poor taste to help the less fortunate with them, but it would sorta depend on if you think the giver would really be that offended, perhaps you could ask them straight up if they minded since you have so much and they have nothing...

RECYCLE THEM! Give it as a gift (again) to any of your friends.
Nowadays, we should be more practical and dont worry that ur friends will find out, what they don't know wont hurt them....

Ask your friends if they would like them. Let them have their pick of your repeats and whats ever left (if there is anything) have a garage sale, put it on ebay, dontate it to a charity...

E-bay it individually or bundle it. Then put the money into a savings or put it towards your Honey moon.
