In 20 years of policing I've never said this to anyone in the field. Officers are trained to be very clear and specific as it relates to what we want a subject to do. No room for ambiguity in that respect. Most of the answers above are correct if you follow the assumption that it's just for a pat down. If an officer is pointing a weapon at you they probably want you face down on the ground with your arms outstretched, and not standing. See my point?

A police officer is not likely to tell you to "assume the position" because it presumes that you know what you are supposed to do. TV & movies cops do it for dramatic effect and it basically means "hands on your head and spread your legs."

It means he's going to search your person for weapons, drugs, contriband or maybe he wants to see if you're a male or an male impersonator. "The position" is = face away from the cop, and spread your feet apart and interlock your hands behind your head,, or = step back from a building or vehicle, lean foward and place your hands (palms down) against the building or vehicle, and don't move until you're told you can.

Cops don't use this terminology with a suspect unless they've searched them previously and the suspect knows what's expected from them.

Normally, they will tell you exactly what to do. Usually face a wall or lie the ground with your hands outstretched. They they will cuff you by moving both arms. At least, that's what on TV

I always fire back with, "I just did assume the postion... with your wife!"

Funny how most cops don't see the humor in that though.
