i recently adopted a yorkshire terrier that was rescued. and he seems super skinny. i have had male yorkies before. and they were skinny. but this one just seems extra skinny. he refuses to eat dry dog food. so i have started giving him beef stick snacks, and other doggy treats. should i just let him eat whatever he wants to fatten him up. or should i hold out, until he starts eating the dry food. the people at the rescue said he would eat dry food. maybe he just needs more time to adapt? what do you think?

I'd give him exactly what the rescue people gave him... same brand. Probably just needs time to adjust. If you give him too many different things... than he might have digestion problems as many dogs are sensitive that way. Be patient and give him space...and he should come around and feel right at home.

Kudos by the way for getting a rescue dog...rather than a puppy. There are so many great dogs out there that are waiting for homes like yours.

I would try any boiled meat, preferably chicken, and rice..he should really like this and actually want to eat it! Try mixing it with dry food after a day or two and see if he will eat it..Or try hand-feeding it to him. Don't give him all treats or rich people food-that's a sure way to cause serious diseases of the pancreas in little dogs. I hand fed my little Yorkie girl when I found her. She wouldn't eat unless I did. After about 6 months of babying her, she proceeded to eat everything in sight..Not all Yorkies are finicky eaters..For the rest of her life she would eat anything at all! She just needed a little help at first. Maybe that's what your guy needs!

(Have a fem yorkie-pom mix who had same problem) Try mixing the dry food with moist food of the same brand. Try another flavor. Please don't feed him "people food". It's not good for his heart. (When I was young my father fed our Chihuahua-Pom table food and she eventually developed water in the pericardium, the sac surrounding her heart. She had to be put down.)

If he's not taking to the current or new flavor, try a different brand, but switch him over gradually. Each dog food brand has it's own distinctive bacteria that screws with your puppy's tummy once you try to switch food... Ever notice how they vomit or get diahrrea if you change food too fast. It's not that they don't like the food, pup could like it just fine, but the bacteria is making trouble south of a north facing canine, so you switch them back to what they were on. (that'$ how the$e pup-food companie$ keep you buying the brand you $tarted on) ($hhhhh!)

Try a holistic brand such as Canine Caviar which has no bacteria and you won't need to worry about gradual switching. It's slightly more money, but so is healthier food for people.
Feed him maybe 2-3 times a day until he gets close to the weight you want him then cut him back little by little. maybe once or twice a day.
Whatever you do...don't change your exercise regimen either, keep walking him every day. He has to get fat in a healthy manner, doesn't he? Good luck.

Yorkies are finicky eaters skinny or not. If he learns that hey i dont eat this and hes gonna give me treats then she will continue to do that. You have to get him on a schedule, I feed Iams they have these Iams savory sauces that u can put on the dry food. You can do the can thing but it tends to cause looser stools. no treats until he starts eating his own food regularly. good luck with ur new doggie and good job for rescuing an adult dog. :)

Try mixing a spoonful of canned in with the dry.Stir it up good so that the dry food is coated.A combination of the two is best for your dog,as the canned provides a little extra meat protein for a nice coat.

He needs balanced nutrition, so hold off on treats..Boiled chicken with rice should get him going, and add a little kibble each day to it, until it is kibble moistened with broth..No extra fat..That could cause major pancreas problem in undernourished dog..
Feed 3 times per day until he is of proper weight.

I think you need to find somthing healthy for him to eat. Next time you cook hamburgers take some of the grease and mix it in with his food. It will make in tatse good for him and hopefully he will eat it. Grease also helps with his digestive system it cleans them out so dont start out with too much or he will poop everywhere. It will also make his coat shinny. Hope it works!
